Chapter 7

Claire appeared on the screen again.

This recording was not for the girls.

It was for Ethan.

She looked thinner than he remembered.

The video had been made during the final months of her illness.

Ethan sat down without meaning to.

Claire smiled softly.

“If you’re watching this, someone finally became careless.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Victor looked toward the door.

Thomas blocked it.

Claire continued.

“I need you to understand something before anger makes you stupid.”

Grant almost laughed.

Then saw Ethan’s face and stopped.

Claire’s recording continued.

“Victor has been telling people fatherhood changed you.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Samuel stared at him.

Claire said:

“He isn’t entirely wrong.”

Ethan looked at the screen.

“You did change.”

“You came home earlier.”

“You stopped treating every insult like war.”

“You learned there are things worth preserving instead of conquering.”

A pause.

“Victor calls that weakness.”

Silence.

Claire continued.

“He approached me twice.”

“He wanted me to convince you to spend more time overseas.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

Why had she never told him?

Claire answered almost as if she heard him.

“I didn’t tell you because you would have thrown him out before I understood who stood with him.”

Victor looked pale now.

Claire continued.

“He believes the old family will choose fear if given the right crisis.”

“There is always a crisis with men like Victor.”

“If one doesn’t exist, they build it.”

Thomas looked toward Ethan.

The overseas crises.

Built.

Claire continued.

“But Victor has one problem.”

“He does not understand children.”

Harper stepped closer to the tablet.

Claire smiled from the past.

“Children remember tone before words.”

“They remember who makes food disappear.”

“Who turns lights off.”

“Who makes their mother cry.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Claire did not name her.

Not yet.

Then:

“If someone ever uses me to frighten our girls…”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“…don’t waste time defending my memory.”

“Protect them.”

Harper began crying.

Ethan lifted her.

Claire continued.

“And if anyone tells them I left because they were too much…”

Vanessa looked away.

“…then you know the person saying it has already decided cruelty is useful.”

Silence.

The video ended.

No accusation.

No dramatic list of conspirators.

Something worse.

A pattern.

Claire had seen Victor clearly.

And she had understood the kind of people he would recruit.

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“How long did you know this video existed?”

She shook her head.

“Never saw it.”

“Lie.”

“No.”

“Then why did you run for the tablet?”

She stopped.

Grant looked at her.

Victor too.

Vanessa realized she had been isolated.

Ethan waited.

Finally:

“Claire showed me part of it.”

The room went still.

“When?”

“A week before she died.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“What part?”

Vanessa looked toward the four girls.

Claire had shown Vanessa the warning about using her death against them.

Vanessa knew exactly what Claire feared.

And after Claire died—

she did precisely that.
