Chapter 9

The missing man was named Malcolm Vane.

Ethan knew the name immediately.

Everyone did.

Malcolm had served Ethan’s father for thirty-four years.

Retired.

Respected.

The kind of man old capos still called before making uncomfortable decisions.

Victor had built the midnight plan around his presence.

But Malcolm was not at the party.

Ethan looked at Victor.

“Where is he?”

Victor said nothing.

Grant laughed nervously.

“Maybe he changed his mind.”

Thomas checked the estate cameras.

No arrival.

No departure.

Then Harper whispered:

“Old man basement.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Harper pointed toward the hallway.

“Vanessa says don’t go down.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Ethan handed Harper to Samuel’s wife.

Then walked toward the service stairs.

Thomas followed.

Victor shouted:

“Ethan.”

He did not stop.

The basement wine room was locked.

Thomas opened it.

Malcolm Vane sat inside.

Alive.

Angry.

No injuries.

His phone missing.

The old man stood immediately.

“About time.”

Ethan stared.

“Who locked you in?”

Malcolm laughed.

“Your charming partner.”

Vanessa’s face went white upstairs when they brought him out.

Malcolm looked at her.

“You said the cellar door jammed.”

Vanessa smiled weakly.

“It did.”

“No.”

He held up a broken brass latch.

“You locked it.”

Victor interrupted.

“Malcolm.”

The old man turned.

His face hardened.

“Don’t.”

That one word changed Victor.

Ethan noticed.

Malcolm looked around.

Then at the girls wrapped in blankets.

His expression darkened.

“What happened?”

Nobody answered.

He saw the moldy bread still on the breakfast table.

Then Vanessa.

Then Victor.

Understanding came slowly.

“You actually did it.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Malcolm stared.

“I thought the neglect story was theater.”

Ethan looked at him.

“What story?”

Malcolm faced him.

“Victor told me he had evidence you were leaving the girls unattended.”

“He wanted me here for a private intervention.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“Intervention.”

“That’s what he called it.”

Malcolm looked at Victor.

“He said Vanessa had been begging you to come home.”

Vanessa flinched.

Everything reversed.

The abuser presented herself as rescuer.

Malcolm continued.

“When I arrived early, I saw Harper in the corridor.”

“She asked me for bread.”

Silence.

“I went looking.”

“Vanessa found me.”

“Then I found the wine cellar.”

Vanessa snapped:

“You were snooping.”

Malcolm’s face hardened.

“You locked an old man underground because he saw a hungry child.”

Grant muttered:

“Not exactly a child.”

Everyone turned.

He realized.

Too late.

Ethan’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

Grant said nothing.

Harper stared at him.

Grant looked toward Victor.

Then away.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Not exactly a child?”

Grant swallowed.

Victor closed his eyes.

Grant finally said:

“Not exactly only the children.”

Silence.

May you like

The plan involved someone else in the house.

Someone the girls had been used to hide.
