Chapter 8

Vanessa did not apologize.

That would have required shame.

Instead, she became angry.

“Yes.”

She looked at Ethan.

“She warned me.”

“And?”

“And she was dying.”

Her voice sharpened.

“She made everything about the girls.”

“Every conversation.”

“Every plan.”

“Every future Christmas.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You think it was easy walking into this house after Saint Claire?”

Ethan stared.

“No one asked you to replace her.”

Vanessa’s expression twisted.

“That’s the problem.”

She pointed toward the girls.

“They never let me.”

Harper hid her face against Ethan’s shoulder.

Vanessa saw.

“You see?”

“Still doing it.”

She mimicked the child’s movement.

“Daddy, Mommy, Claire.”

“Always Claire.”

Willa started crying.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“There.”

“That sound.”

“I listened to that for months.”

Ethan’s voice dropped.

“They were grieving.”

“They were manipulating.”

“They were two.”

“Three now.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Old enough to learn.”

Ethan stared at her.

“How many meals?”

She shrugged.

“Enough.”

“How many?”

“I don’t count.”

Harper whispered:

“She does.”

Vanessa froze.

Harper continued.

“She writes marks.”

Thomas searched Vanessa’s phone.

A note.

Four names.

H.

W.

M.

J.

Beside each—

small tally marks.

Ethan’s face changed.

Food punishments.

Tracked.

Vanessa looked almost proud now that hiding was pointless.

“Consistency matters.”

Samuel Greer stared at her.

“You counted meals you denied?”

Vanessa scoffed.

“Don’t act horrified.”

“Your generation hit children with belts.”

Samuel’s expression hardened.

“And I learned better.”

That silenced her for half a second.

Then Grant shouted:

“Can we stop talking about dinners?”

Ethan turned.

Grant’s panic was different.

He wanted the room away from Vanessa.

Toward what?

Ethan looked at Thomas.

“Search the rest.”

Thomas opened another hidden folder.

Videos.

Not the girls.

Ballroom rehearsals.

Victor.

Grant.

Vanessa.

Three selected capos.

Victor stood at the head of the empty Christmas table.

His recorded voice:

“At midnight, Ethan sees the children.”

Ethan went still.

The video continued.

“Grant provokes him.”

Grant’s face drained.

“Vanessa keeps him angry.”

Vanessa stared.

Victor said:

“If Ethan reacts violently in front of the family, nobody needs to be convinced.”

Silence.

Grant whispered:

“You recorded us?”

Victor’s face hardened.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You said no cameras.”

The coalition fractured completely.

Ethan stared at the video.

The abuse had two purposes.

Break his daughters.

And break him.

They expected Ethan to discover starving children.

Expected rage.

Expected violence.

Expected a room full of witnesses.

Victor had built a coup around Ethan loving his daughters enough to lose control.

But there was one problem.

The rehearsal showed four men at Victor’s table.

Only three were in the ballroom.

The fourth chair was empty.

Someone important had not arrived yet.
