Chapter 11

Bernadette did not tell Felix immediately.
She stopped answering Marcus’s calls instead.
That lasted two days.
Then Marcus showed up outside Felix’s school.
Bernadette called Luciano.
Not because she wanted muscle.
Because she wanted a witness.
By the time Luciano arrived, Marcus was standing on the sidewalk arguing with her.
Felix remained inside with school staff.
“You’re keeping my son from me,” Marcus said.
Bernadette folded her arms.
“You used his surgery money.”
Marcus looked toward Luciano.
There was no surprise.
Only calculation.
“You showed her?”
“Yes.”
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Of course you did.”
Bernadette stared at her husband.
“Tell me he’s wrong.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You want seven-year-old history now?”
“I want one sentence.”
He did not give it.
That was enough.
Bernadette stepped backward.
For years she had defended Marcus because she believed he had saved their family when Luciano would not.
Without that story, every sacrifice she made for him looked different.
Every form.
Every lie.
Every time she called Theo spoiled.
Every time she told Felix they had to fight for what belonged to them.
Luciano felt no satisfaction watching her understand it.
He had wanted truth.
Truth was not always satisfying.
Later, Bernadette sat inside Luciano’s car while Felix remained at school.
“I hit Theo.”
Luciano said nothing.
“I took things from him because I thought…”
She stopped.
“You thought hurting my son balanced something done to yours.”
Bernadette closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
Luciano looked through the windshield.
“You don't get to blame Marcus for that part.”
“I know.”
It was the first time she said it without defending herself.
Meanwhile, outside counsel warned Luciano that even a complete financial record would not automatically prove every artifact sale involved criminal intent.
Some transfer records were ambiguous.
Some objects had complicated ownership histories.
Marcus would fight every allegation.
Bernadette’s testimony would matter.
But helping expose her husband could affect her marriage, her finances, and Felix’s relationship with his father.

For the first time, Luciano could not order the person he needed most to cooperate.
Bernadette had to choose.
