Chapter 4

Luciano met the accountant before sunrise.

The reimbursements looked legitimate at first.

Transportation.

Conservation.

Private storage.

Insurance appraisal.

Nothing spectacular.

Then the accountant showed him the vendors.

Two companies shared the same mailing address in White Plains.

A third used a virtual office.

Marcus had approved all three.

Bernadette had signed collection-transfer forms supporting several invoices.

Luciano felt the shape of the problem changing.

This was no longer a family argument over who owned an old watch.

He authorized a forensic review.

Then he did something Marcus never expected.

He removed both Marcus and Bernadette from museum access.

Their key cards stopped working before breakfast.

Marcus called immediately.

“You locked my wife out?”

“And you.”

“You don’t have that authority.”

“I chair the foundation.”

“For now.”

Luciano leaned back.

“What does that mean?”

Marcus disconnected.

By noon, four relatives had called Luciano.

All used similar language.

He was humiliating Bernadette.

He was overreacting.

He was punishing Felix.

One uncle finally said what the others avoided.

“You know why Bernie feels the way she does.”

“No.”

A pause.

“Come on, Luciano.”

“I said no.”

The uncle sighed.

“After what happened with Felix?”

Luciano sat forward.

“What happened with Felix?”

The line went quiet.

Then the uncle realized Luciano genuinely did not know.

Seven years earlier, shortly after Felix was born, the child developed a serious heart condition requiring surgery and months of specialist care.

Luciano remembered the illness.

He remembered sending flowers.

He remembered Marcus saying everything had been handled.

Apparently Bernadette remembered something else.

She believed she had asked Luciano for financial help.

And Luciano had refused.

He stared at the phone.

“I never refused.”

“That isn’t what Bernie says.”

Luciano hung up and immediately opened old financial records.

The family accountant had archives going back years.

Finding the transaction took time.

But eventually one line appeared.

Five years earlier.

$450,000 transferred from a Venturi family emergency account.

Recipient:

Marcus Venturi.

Memo:

FELIX MEDICAL / HOUSEHOLD SUPPORT.

Luciano stared at it.

He remembered approving the payment now.

Marcus had told him Bernadette was too overwhelmed to discuss money directly.

Luciano had sent more than enough to cover the hospital bills and keep their mortgage current.

So why had Bernadette spent years believing he refused to help her son?
