Chapter 5

Luciano did not tell Bernadette about the transfer.

Not yet.

He wanted to understand what Marcus had done with the money.

The accountant traced what remained available.

Roughly $170,000 had gone toward medical bills.

Another portion covered legitimate household expenses.

But more than $200,000 had moved within weeks into Marcus’s struggling freight company.

The company survived.

Felix recovered.

Bernadette apparently believed Marcus had borrowed money privately to save them.

Luciano sat quietly after the accountant finished.

Marcus had taken Luciano’s help, hidden its source, and used part of it for himself.

That explained resentment.

It did not explain the museum thefts.

Not completely.

The forensic team then found the first missing artifact.

The presentation lantern had been sold through a private dealer in Connecticut eleven months earlier.

The seller used an intermediary.

Payment eventually reached a company controlled by Marcus.

Luciano closed the report.

“How much?”

“Thirty-eight thousand.”

A small amount compared with the family’s wealth.

Enough to matter to someone already underwater.

Further review showed Marcus’s freight company had been carrying substantial debt for years.

The same business Luciano’s money had quietly rescued after Felix’s surgery.

Marcus had never recovered financially.

He had simply hidden the weakness.

Bernadette arrived at the museum that afternoon demanding access to her office.

Luciano met her downstairs.

“You embarrassed me in front of my own staff.”

“You’re suspended while they review the collection.”

“I built half those exhibits.”

“That’s why your signatures matter.”

Her eyes hardened.

“You really think I stole from you?”

Luciano chose his words carefully.

“I think you signed records that weren't true.”

Bernadette looked away.

That was enough.

“Why?”

She picked up her handbag.

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“Try.”

She laughed without humor.

“You’ve never had to beg anyone to save your child.”

Luciano felt the old bank record inside his jacket.

“Who did you beg?”

Bernadette looked toward Marcus’s empty office.

“My husband.”

May you like

That answer told Luciano something painful.

Whatever Marcus had done with the museum, Bernadette’s loyalty had been built on a lie she still believed.
