Chapter 9

Within three weeks, Marcus was removed from all museum and foundation duties pending review.
His freight company began losing lenders after questions about his finances surfaced.
Bernadette moved with Felix into her sister’s guest apartment in Queens.
She did not file for divorce.
She did not go home either.
Luciano faced problems of his own.
Marcus filed a complaint over the gala assault.
Bernadette considered doing the same.
Luciano’s attorney told him plainly that discovering theft did not erase the fact that he had struck two relatives.
Luciano did not argue.
The museum board also questioned why he had allowed such loose family control over charitable property.
That accusation was harder to hear.
Because it was true.
He had treated the museum like an extension of the Venturi household.
Family members came and went.
Objects moved informally.
Marcus had authority because Luciano trusted him.
Bernadette had access because she was family.
The system had been built on relationships rather than controls.
Marcus exploited it.
Luciano created it.
Then Bernadette requested a meeting.
She arrived carrying a folder.
Inside were seven years of medical bills from Felix’s heart treatment.
“I found these in Marcus’s files.”
Luciano looked through them.
Several had handwritten notes.
PAID — PERSONAL LOAN.
Bernadette pointed.
“He told me he borrowed from three people.”
“Did you ever meet them?”
“No.”
“See loan agreements?”
“He handled the money.”
Luciano opened his desk drawer.
He removed a copy of the old transfer record.
Bernadette read it.
Her face changed.
“No.”
Luciano said nothing.
She read it again.
$450,000.
Marcus Venturi.
FELIX MEDICAL / HOUSEHOLD SUPPORT.
“No.”
Her voice was quieter now.
“He told me you said no.”
“I didn't.”
Bernadette stared at the document.
Then at Luciano.
“You gave him this?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The week before Felix’s surgery.”
Her chair moved backward.
Bernadette stood.
For years she had justified every small act of resentment with one memory.
Luciano refusing to help while her son was sick.
That memory had never happened.
May you like
But Luciano still did not know why Marcus had needed her to believe it.
The answer would change the entire story of their family.
