Chapter 1

Giovanni did not open Helena’s letter immediately.
That frightened Emilio more than if he had torn it open in front of everyone.
His son pushed himself upright beneath the tilted memorial portrait, one hand braced against the marble floor. His tropical shirt looked almost obscene against the sea of black funeral clothing.
Clarissa sat among spilled dresses and resort clothes from the opened suitcases.
Her breathing had become quick.
Lucia remained beside Helena’s portrait.
Still.
Too still.
Giovanni looked at the yellowed envelope in his hand.
Then at Emilio.
“You wanted this badly enough to swing at me.”
Emilio wiped blood from his lip.
His eyes moved toward the mourners.
“Not here.”
Giovanni’s thumb stopped beneath Helena’s handwriting.
A long silence followed.
Emilio’s confidence returned just enough for him to straighten his shoulders.
“Dad. You don’t know what that is.”
Giovanni finally looked at him.
“That is precisely the problem.”
He ordered the funeral hall cleared except for immediate family, attorneys, and two senior bodyguards.
Nobody argued.
When the doors closed, Giovanni broke the seal.
Inside was one sheet.
Helena’s handwriting shook slightly across the page.
Giovanni read silently.
His face did not change.
Lucia watched his eyes.
Emilio watched his hands.
Clarissa watched the letter.
That difference mattered.
Giovanni reached the final paragraph.
His breathing slowed.
Then he read one sentence aloud.
“If Emilio returns pretending he was away when I died, check the date on the ticket.”
Nobody moved.
Emilio’s face drained.
Clarissa immediately looked toward the overturned suitcase.
Giovanni followed her eyes.
The tropical airline tag still hung from the handle.
He walked over.
Picked it up.
The departure date was printed beneath the destination code.
One day after Helena died.
Giovanni slowly turned toward his son.
“You left for the islands after your mother was dead.”
Emilio’s hand tightened around his watch.
His voice came out rough.
“I can explain.”
Giovanni folded Helena’s letter once.
“No.”
He looked toward Lucia.
“You can all explain.”
Lucia’s eyes lifted.
Giovanni saw something there he did not expect.
Fear.
Then Lucia whispered:
“Dad… there was another letter.”
Giovanni’s fingers stopped.
“What other letter?”
Lucia looked toward Emilio.
May you like
Emilio closed his eyes.
The envelope in Giovanni’s hand had not been Helena’s only attempt to speak.
