Chapter 11

Giovanni opened the second page alone.

Nobody else touched it.

Helena had written only a few paragraphs.

She did not ask him to punish Emilio.

She did not ask him to exile Lucia.

She did not mention Clarissa by name.

Instead, she wrote about him.

About the way rooms became silent when he entered.

About how family members learned to hide mistakes until they became disasters.

About how every problem inside the Serravalle family eventually became a question of what Giovanni would do to whoever caused it.

One sentence stopped him.

Fear has made you powerful, but it has made everyone around you stupid in exactly the moments they most need to be honest.

Giovanni sat with the letter for almost ten minutes.

Nobody interrupted.

When he finally returned to the funeral hall, Emilio stood immediately.

Giovanni raised one hand.

His son stopped.

“What did she say?”

Giovanni looked at him.

“Nothing that saves you.”

Emilio’s shoulders dropped.

Then Giovanni turned to his attorney.

“Preserve everything.”

Lucia looked up.

“The financial records?”

“All of them.”

Emilio’s eyes widened.

“Dad.”

Giovanni did not look at him.

“Seabrook. Foundation disbursements. The call records. The estate access logs. Helena’s scans.”

Emilio’s breathing became heavy.

“You'll bury the family.”

Giovanni finally faced him.

“No.”

His voice remained quiet.

“I’m done burying the truth with your mother.”

Clarissa gripped Emilio’s arm.

He pulled away again.

The relationship that had survived secrecy was already beginning to collapse under exposure.

Then Lucia whispered:

“What happens to me?”

Giovanni looked at his daughter.

For several seconds she looked five years old again.

He hated that.

“You resign from the foundation.”

Her lips parted.

“You cooperate.”

Tears formed.

“And after that?”

Giovanni folded Helena’s letter.

“That depends on what the truth costs.”

Lucia lowered her head.

Then Emilio laughed bitterly.

“You're pretending this is justice.”

Giovanni looked at him.

“It is not.”

A pause.

“It is consequence.”

Emilio’s eyes hardened.

“Then start with yourself.”

The room went silent.

Giovanni’s thumb stopped against his ring.

Emilio looked toward Helena’s second letter.

May you like

“She blamed you too.”

For the first time, Giovanni had no answer.
