Chapter 12

Giovanni did start with himself.

He ordered an independent review of every family-linked business Helena had flagged.

That decision caused immediate panic.

Capos called.

Attorneys objected.

Old allies demanded private meetings.

Giovanni refused most of them.

One senior associate confronted him in the estate library.

“You’re opening doors Helena wanted closed for thirty years.”

Giovanni remained seated.

“She wanted them opened at the end.”

“She was grieving.”

“My wife was dying.”

The man stopped.

Giovanni’s eyes hardened.

“Do not reduce clarity to grief because it inconveniences you.”

The associate left.

Lucia formally resigned from the foundation.

She also turned over records showing where the unauthorized money went.

Most recipients were real.

The need was real.

The method was not.

Emilio’s Seabrook accounts proved more damaging.

He had moved money without approval, falsified internal explanations, and used Helena’s expected signature as though consent were inevitable.

Clarissa had prepared many of the documents.

Their motive remained painfully ordinary.

They wanted independence from Giovanni.

They wanted something that belonged to them.

Instead of asking for freedom, they stole the resources to create it.

Giovanni understood the resentment.

He did not excuse the method.

Then the review uncovered something unexpected.

Helena had quietly reimbursed several of Lucia’s unauthorized charity transfers from her own personal accounts.

Giovanni stared at the records.

“She knew.”

His attorney nodded.

“She was covering some of Lucia’s shortfalls while documenting them.”

Lucia cried when she heard.

“She was protecting me.”

Giovanni shook his head.

“No.”

Lucia looked up.

“She was buying you time to tell the truth yourself.”

That distinction mattered.

Then another file surfaced.

Two months before Helena died, she had amended her personal will.

Emilio’s inheritance was reduced.

Lucia’s was reduced too.

The difference had been moved into a trust for victims and families harmed by Serravalle business activity.

Giovanni stared at the amendment.

Helena had already begun reallocating family power before anyone realized she was preparing to confront them.

Then his attorney pointed to one clause.

May you like

The trust could not activate without Giovanni’s signature.

Helena had left him one final choice.
