Chapter 8

Lucia admitted taking the red ledger.

Not immediately.

Only after Giovanni remained silent long enough that she could no longer tolerate the room.

“I found it.”

Her hands shook in her lap.

“I put it in my bag.”

“Where is it now?”

She looked toward the funeral hall doors.

“I burned it.”

Emilio swore.

Clarissa covered her face.

Giovanni remained still.

Lucia continued quickly.

“I thought Mom had copies.”

“Did she?”

“I don't know.”

“You burned the only evidence you knew existed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her eyes finally met his.

“Because it wasn't only about Emilio.”

Giovanni’s gaze sharpened.

Lucia looked terrified now.

Not of punishment.

Of what came next.

“The ledger had names.”

“What names?”

She swallowed.

“Capos. Businesses. judges. charities. politicians.”

Giovanni said nothing.

Lucia’s voice dropped.

“Mom had been documenting everything she thought was dirty inside the family.”

Emilio stared at her.

“You never told me that.”

“No.”

Clarissa’s breathing changed.

Giovanni slowly understood.

Helena had not merely discovered her son’s hidden project.

She had been documenting the structure around Giovanni himself.

Lucia continued.

“She said if the family couldn't survive the truth, it didn't deserve to survive.”

Giovanni looked toward Helena’s portrait.

He could hear her voice inside that sentence.

That was exactly how she spoke when she had stopped being afraid of him.

His attorney asked:

“Did she intend to give the ledger to authorities?”

Lucia shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Giovanni looked at her.

“Why destroy it?”

Lucia’s eyes filled again.

“Because I thought it would destroy you.”

That answer hurt differently.

Emilio had protected his money.

Clarissa had protected Emilio.

Lucia had protected Giovanni.

Helena died while each person in the room protected someone other than her.

Then Giovanni’s attorney approached with another recovered document.

A cloud-storage account linked to Helena had been found.

The ledger itself was gone.

But several scanned pages survived.

One page contained the Seabrook transfers.

Another contained notes about Emilio.

A third page contained a heading that made Giovanni’s face change.

LUCIA — FOUNDATION DISBURSEMENTS.

His daughter had not burned the ledger only to protect her father.

Helena had been investigating her too.
