Chapter 14

Lucia came to Silvano’s attorney’s office without jewelry.
He noticed because she had worn rings to every family event for as long as he could remember.
She sat down.
“I’m not fighting the basic facts.”
Silvano waited.
Her attorney confirmed she would accept responsibility for knowingly staging the locked-vehicle incident and cooperate regarding Marco’s role.
She would dispute any suggestion that she intended physical harm.
That was truthful.
Silvano could live with truthful disagreement.
Lucia looked toward him.
“Will you tell Ethan I’m sorry?”
“No.”
Her face tightened.
“I am sorry.”
“Then tell him when professionals decide hearing it is good for him.”
“You won't even give him a letter?”
“I won't use him to make either of us feel better.”
Lucia looked down.
After a moment she nodded.
That was new.
Then she asked:
“Will you keep him from me forever?”
Silvano did not answer immediately.
“I don't know.”
Lucia started crying.
Not loudly.
She covered her mouth and looked toward the window.
Silvano did not comfort her.
He also did not punish her with certainty he did not possess.
“I won't decide today what Ethan is allowed to want five years from now.”
Lucia wiped her face.
“That’s fair.”
Marco made the opposite choice.
He continued denying responsibility for the dangerous delay and contested the theft allegations.
The transportation company terminated him after its independent investigation.
Insurers and company counsel pursued recovery of losses.
Criminal proceedings moved separately.
No family negotiation could stop them now.
Silvano also resolved his own assault case through counsel, accepting responsibility for striking Lucia after stopping her flight.
The outcome was not dramatic.
Fines.
Mandatory anger-management counseling.
Conditions he would once have considered insulting.
He completed them.

The final exposure was no longer about who Silvano could crush.
It was about which rules he was willing to let apply to himself.
