Chapter 7

The warehouse stored imported automotive parts and high-value specialty equipment.
Marco had legitimate access.
He did not have authority to visit after midnight without logging the trip.
Outside counsel reviewed inventory discrepancies.
They found them.
Small at first.
Performance wheels.
Electronic modules.
Specialty detailing equipment.
Then larger items.
Imported engines.
Transmission assemblies.
Rare vehicle parts.
Nothing glamorous enough to attract immediate attention.
Valuable enough to become a serious side business.
Marco had been moving company inventory using estate SUVs because those vehicles were rarely searched or questioned.
The missing GPS logs hid the routes.
Service mode prevented some connected data from synchronizing normally.
Silvano looked at the report.
Marco had not activated service mode for Lucia’s plan.
It was already active because he had used the SUV the previous night to hide another unauthorized run.
That detail mattered.
Marco should have known remote start might fail.
He knew the system better than anyone.
Then one of the fleet technicians gave a statement.
Marco had asked him months earlier:
“If a remote command doesn't complete in service mode, does the app still sometimes show pending?”
The technician had said yes.
Silvano read the statement twice.
Marco knew the display could be misleading.
Lucia did not.
Silvano’s attorney cautioned him.
“That doesn't prove Marco wanted the children hurt.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
Silvano hated hearing that word.
Proof.
He had once believed knowing someone was guilty was enough.
Now two children had almost died inside a system built around people trusting his instincts.
He wanted evidence.
The fleet records showed Marco checked the remote-start application twice after Lucia locked the SUV.
Both commands failed.
He never told her.
He never opened the vehicle.
He never raised an alarm.
For seventeen minutes he knew the climate system had not started.
Silvano looked toward the motor court.

That was no longer a mistake.
It was a choice.
