Chapter 10 - VITTORIO NEVER CHOSE THIS FOR HIS SON
The major twist arrived through Vittorio’s former nurse, not through money, a hidden fortune, or some miraculous recording.
Her name was Evelyn Porter.
She was eighty-three.
Investigators had already interviewed her once about household discipline.
During a second interview, she brought an old notebook she used to record medication schedules, doctor instructions, and significant conversations because Vittorio’s condition frequently left him confused after treatment.
One entry was dated six days before Vittorio died.
Antonio read it in her living room.
Mr. Bellaforte distressed after argument with sister.
Below it:
Asked me to contact Charles again. Says Lavinia has convinced Antonio that cruelty is Father’s order. Says: “If I die before I fix this, she will turn him into proof that she was right.”
Antonio stopped.
He could not continue for almost a minute.
Evelyn waited.
The next entry was worse.
Vittorio had tried to speak privately with seventeen-year-old Antonio.
Lavinia prevented it, saying he needed rest.
Later Vittorio told the nurse:
My son thinks I wanted this for him. I didn’t.
That was the twist.
Antonio had spent almost four decades believing his father designed the harsh childhood that made him feared.
Vittorio had actually spent years trying to stop it.
Lavinia had created the discipline system.
When Antonio survived it and eventually rose to control the family, she treated his success as proof.
