Chapter 9 - THE FILE LAVINIA TRIED TO ERASE
The old law firm found the missing material in microfilmed administrative records.
Not the original petition.
Enough metadata to establish that it existed.
Vittorio had drafted a legal instrument revoking Lavinia’s authority over his children and removing her as temporary household guardian during his medical absences.
It was prepared when Antonio was eleven.
It was never filed.
The billing record showed why.
The day before execution, Vittorio was hospitalized with a second cardiac event.
Three weeks later, the matter was marked:
Client elected not to proceed.
But the attorney who supposedly entered that notation was already on medical leave.
Someone else had altered the file.
The firm could not prove who.
Antonio remembered Lavinia accessing the archive fifteen years earlier.
Investigators requested records from the storage company that once held the physical file.
One old intake form carried her signature.
Still circumstantial.
Still not enough for the full truth.
Damian came to Antonio before investigators questioned him.
“I’m going to tell them everything.”
Antonio studied him.
“Everything you did to Lucas?”
“Yes.”
“And what your mother told you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Damian swallowed.
“Because Sofia called me.”
His daughter.
“She asked if the story was true.”
Antonio waited.
Damian’s eyes filled.
“She asked if Grandma taught me to treat her that way too.”
That was enough.
Damian had spent years telling himself his daughter misunderstood him.
Now Lucas had created a mirror he could not look away from.
Before leaving, Damian said something important.
“Mom always said your father thanked her before he died.”
“For what?”
“For making you capable of replacing him.”
Antonio had heard that story many times.
Suddenly he realized there had never been a witness.
Only Lavinia.
The words supposedly validating everything she did came from a dying man who could no longer contradict her.
Three clues now stood together:
Vittorio’s letters ordering the punishments stopped.
Former staff remembered him opposing Lavinia.
And the legal petition showed he had tried to remove her authority entirely.
