Chapter 12 - THE COST OF OPENING THE DOOR
The investigation did not stay limited to Lavinia and Damian.
Antonio had been warned.
Now the consequences arrived.
Authorities reviewing the estate records found financial and business matters requiring separate inquiries.
Antonio’s attorneys negotiated access carefully, but he refused to obstruct.
Several associates were furious.
One accused him of sacrificing the whole family because he “got emotional over parenting.”
Antonio removed the man from every company he controlled.
Another relative threatened to take business elsewhere.
Antonio let him.
His influence shrank.
So did his tolerance for preserving it.
Damian was charged in connection with his treatment of Lucas and entered negotiations through counsel. Because he admitted his conduct early, cooperated fully, and had no prior child-abuse conviction, the outcome would be handled differently from Lavinia’s.
Antonio did not interfere.
That surprised Damian.
“You could make this easier.”
“Yes.”
“Will you?”
“No.”
Damian looked hurt.
Antonio did not enjoy it.
“You told my son hunger was discipline. If consequences disappear because you share my blood, nothing changed.”
Damian eventually nodded.
Lavinia remained defiant.
She framed everything as a family disagreement exaggerated by Antonio’s guilt.
Her attorney emphasized that Lucas had suffered no major physical injury.
The child psychologist’s evaluation mattered.
Lucas had begun hiding pieces of food in his pockets.
He asked permission to drink water even at home.
He became anxious when Antonio put on a suit jacket because he associated his father leaving with punishment beginning.
Those were consequences.
Small enough for adults to overlook.
Large enough to shape a childhood.
Antonio read the report alone.
Then went into Lucas’s room and found two crackers beneath his pillow.
He sat beside the bed for a long time.
