Chapter 10

The blue key opened the steel box beneath the garden workshop.

Grant found it just before dawn.

Olivia had chosen the most ordinary hiding place possible.

Behind bags of potting soil.

Beneath an old workbench.

The key turned once.

Inside were no legal files.

No contracts.

No dramatic stacks of paper.

Olivia knew better.

She had collected things people could not explain away.

Three burner phones.

Two listening devices.

A miniature recorder.

Photographs.

A cufflink.

And one small voice recorder wrapped in Lily’s old baby blanket.

Grant sat on the workshop floor.

Victor stood near the door.

Neither spoke.

Grant pressed play.

Olivia’s voice filled the room.

“If Grant hears this, I didn’t get enough time.”

His eyes closed.

Her voice continued.

“Marcus thinks he is building a wall around Grant.”

Pause.

“He is actually building a cage.”

Grant stared at the recorder.

Olivia named three men.

Marcus.

Renata.

And Peter Cole.

Renata and Marcus’s uncle.

A retired family associate Grant had not seen in years.

Victor cursed quietly.

Olivia continued.

“Peter is the one bringing outsiders.”

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“The plan isn’t to kill Grant.”

Pause.

“They want him frightened enough to stop trusting anyone except them.”

It matched Marcus’s confession.

Then Olivia’s voice changed.

More urgent.

“I found out what they’re doing to Lily’s schedule.”

Grant froze.

Victor looked at him.

The recording continued.

“They know when she sleeps.”

His hands tightened.

“When the nanny leaves.”

His breathing slowed.

“When Grant takes her to the park.”

Victor whispered:

“Jesus.”

Olivia continued.

“They plan to create an attempt on Lily.”

Grant went completely still.

Not hurt her.

Not necessarily.

Create an attempt.

A fake threat against his daughter.

Enough to terrify him.

Enough to make Marcus’s security indispensable.

Enough to pull Grant deeper into dependence.

Olivia continued.

“If they can make him believe the danger is everywhere, he’ll let Marcus control everything.”

Then:

“And if anything goes wrong…”

A long pause.

Olivia’s breath shook.

“They’ve already decided who they’ll blame.”

Grant looked at Victor.

The recorder clicked.

Then another voice.

Peter Cole.

Faint.

“Renata.”

Movement.

Olivia whispering:

“They’re here.”

The recording ended.

Grant stared at the machine.

Peter had been in the house the night Olivia died.

A fourth person.

Maybe more.

Victor asked:

“Where is Peter now?”

Grant stood.

“Renata knows.”

Back inside, Renata was eating breakfast.

That offended Grant more than it should have.

She looked up.

“Finally.”

Then at the recorder.

Her fork stopped.

Grant sat across from her.

“Where is Peter?”

Renata’s expression stayed calm.

“My uncle?”

“Yes.”

“Haven’t seen him in years.”

Grant placed the recorder between them.

Pressed play.

Peter’s voice filled the kitchen.

Renata’s face changed.

Grant stopped the audio.

“Again.”

She said nothing.

“Where is he?”

Renata smiled slowly.

“You think finding a dead woman’s toys changes anything?”

Grant stared.

She leaned forward.

“Peter taught Marcus everything.”

“Where?”

Silence.

“Renata.”

Her smile widened.

“You’re still asking the wrong question.”

Grant waited.

“You should be asking why Peter never came back for the blue box.”

Grant’s eyes narrowed.

Renata leaned closer.

“Maybe because he already got what mattered.”

May you like

And suddenly the steel box looked less like the secret Olivia died protecting—

and more like the decoy she wanted them to find.
