Chapter 12

Peter Cole chose an old auto garage for the meeting.
Grant did not bring Lily.
He did not bring Renata.
He brought Victor and four men.
Peter waited beside an ordinary sedan.
No dramatic army.
No throne.
Just an old man who had spent two years believing he had already won.
“You look like your father.”
Grant ignored that.
Peter smiled.
“Still sensitive?”
“Where were you after Olivia fell?”
Peter’s smile weakened.
Grant held up the blue key.
“You wanted this.”
Peter looked at it.
“Yes.”
“What does it open?”
“You already know.”
“No.”
Peter studied him.
Then laughed.
“Olivia fooled you too.”
That confirmed it.
The key had another use.
Grant waited.
Peter continued.
“There’s a lock beneath the floor in your old study.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
He had never checked.
“Inside?”
Peter smiled.
“Your father’s emergency channel.”
Not paperwork.
Not money.
A secure analog radio system once used to reach three old crews without normal phones.
A relic.
But still trusted by men who hated digital surveillance.
Peter wanted it.
With that channel, he could impersonate Grant’s voice network.
Send orders.
Create panic.
Start wars.
The blue key was not only evidence.
It was access.
Olivia discovered that too.
“She hid the key from you,” Peter said.
“Yes.”
“To protect you?”
Peter laughed.
“No.”
Grant remained still.
“To keep you from becoming your father.”
Interesting.
Peter continued.
“Olivia hated the old system.”
“She hated men like you.”
Peter’s smile faded.
Grant stepped closer.
“Did you order Renata to push her?”
“No.”
“Did you stop her?”
No answer.
“Did Marcus help Olivia?”
Peter laughed.
“No.”
“Did you?”
Silence.
Grant understood.
Nobody did.
Peter looked at him.
“You want someone to blame.”
“I have several.”
“Olivia created the confrontation.”
There it was.
Blame the victim.
Again.
“She could have handed over the key.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
Peter continued.
“She chose principles over her child.”
Victor shifted.
Grant raised a hand.
Peter smiled.
“Truth hurts?”
“No.”
Grant looked at him.
“Cowardice bores me.”
Peter’s face changed.
Grant continued.
“Three adults watched a woman fall and decided the problem was that she resisted.”
Peter stepped forward.
“You think Lily is safe because you found a recording?”
“No.”
“Good.”
He smiled.
“Because Renata has spent two years teaching her something useful.”
Grant said nothing.
Peter leaned closer.
“That Daddy can disappear too.”
Grant stared.
Peter continued.
“One bad night.”
“One car.”
“One screaming child.”
“Then she goes quiet all over again.”
Grant’s voice became lethal.
“You will never speak about my daughter again.”
Peter smiled.
“You still don’t understand.”
Then he looked toward Victor.
“Ask him why Olivia called him before she called you.”
Grant turned.
Victor’s face tightened.
Peter laughed.
“Still keeping secrets, old friend?”
Victor closed his eyes.
May you like
Grant realized there was one final truth Olivia had hidden from him.
And Victor had been carrying it for two years.
