Chapter 13

Victor told Grant in the car.
No excuses.
“Olivia planned to take Lily away for one week.”
Grant stared ahead.
“Why?”
“To make you listen.”
“To what?”
“To the threat.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“She thought I wouldn’t believe her?”
“She thought you’d confront Marcus immediately.”
That sounded like Grant.
Victor continued.
“And she was afraid they would move before she finished collecting proof.”
Grant looked out the window.
Olivia knew him too well.
“She wanted to take Lily somewhere safe.”
“Yes.”
“Without telling me.”
“For twenty-four hours.”
Grant closed his eyes.
Peter would use that.
Renata would use it.
Marcus already had.
Olivia was leaving.
Technically true.
Not leaving Grant.
Leaving danger.
Victor continued.
“She called me to arrange a cabin.”
“Did she get there?”
“No.”
Grant already knew.
Back home, Renata smiled when he entered.
“You talked to Victor.”
Grant said nothing.
“So now you know.”
She looked pleased.
“Olivia was taking Lily.”
Grant remained calm.
Renata leaned forward.
“She didn’t trust you.”
“No.”
Renata blinked.
Grant continued.
“She knew exactly what I’d do.”
Her smile faded.
“She was protecting me from my own reaction.”
Renata rolled her eyes.
“Whatever helps you sleep.”
Grant approached.
“Peter told me about the old radio lock.”
For the first time, Renata looked truly frightened.
He saw it.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You thought the key only opened that.”
Silence.
“The engagement jewelry box.”
Grant looked toward the ruined velvet lining.
“You searched Olivia’s things because you thought the key gave Peter access to the old network.”
Renata’s jaw tightened.
Grant continued.
“But you didn't know about the recordings.”
“No.”
“You didn't know about the garden bench.”
“No answer.
“And now Peter knows you failed.”
Renata stood.
“He needs me.”
Grant almost laughed.
“Does he?”
She stopped.
Grant leaned closer.
“Marcus thought Peter needed him too.”
Her face changed.
Grant continued.
“You were useful while you could get close to me.”
Silence.
“The engagement was the finish.”
Renata’s breathing changed.
“You marry me.”
Grant said.
“Peter gets permanent access to the house.”
She looked away.
“You find the key.”
Another step.
“You reopen my father’s network.”
Renata snapped:
“You think this was about power?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
She laughed bitterly.
“It was about survival.”
“Whose?”
“Ours.”
She looked at Marcus’s closed study door.
“Peter owned everything we had.”
There.
Not uncle.
Owner.
Grant waited.
Renata’s voice sharpened.
“He raised us.”
“By starving maids too?”
“Don’t twist this.”
“By threatening children?”
“You don’t understand him.”
Grant’s expression hardened.
Renata continued.
“If we failed, he punished us.”
“Then you became him.”
That landed.
Renata slapped the table.
“You think I wanted to deal with your silent little ghost every day?”
Lily heard from the hallway.
Grant saw her.
Renata didn’t.
She continued.
“She stared at me.”
Her voice became cruel.
“Every meal. Every room.”
“Like she knew.”
Lily’s face tightened.
Renata kept going.
“So yes, I put her in the closet.”
“Yes, I took dessert.”
“Yes, I told her Daddy could disappear.”
She laughed.
“It worked.”
Grant looked at Lily.
Her eyes filled.
Renata finally noticed.
Her face changed.
Grant stepped between them.
Lily did not hide this time.
She looked directly at Renata.
Then said:
“You pushed Mommy because she said no.”
Renata went white.
Lily continued.
“And Uncle Marcus said get phone.”
Silence.
Grant crouched beside her.
Lily looked at him.
“Gray man said take me.”
Grant’s heart stopped.
“What happened?”
Lily’s voice trembled.
“Mommy pushed me in closet.”
Not punishment.
Protection.
Olivia had hidden Lily.
The same closet-like spaces later terrified her because that night began inside one.
Lily continued:
“Mommy closed door.”
Tears rolled down her face.
“Then boom.”
Grant understood.
The fall.
Lily had heard it from inside.
Then:
“Renata opened door.”
Grant looked up.
Renata’s face had collapsed.
Lily whispered:
May you like
“She said Mommy left because I was bad.”
Two years of silence had been built on that lie.
