Chapter 11

Grant returned to the box.
This time alone.
He emptied everything.
Phones.
Recorder.
Photographs.
Baby blanket.
Nothing else.
Then he remembered Lily’s drawing.
Blue rectangle.
Yellow circle.
Green lines.
The wardrobe was blue.
The key was blue.
But the drawing’s yellow circle had never made sense.
He brought Lily into the workshop later that morning.
No interrogation.
No pressure.
He placed crayons on the table.
“Can you draw Mommy’s blue thing again?”
Lily nodded.
Blue rectangle.
Yellow circle.
Green lines.
Grant pointed.
“What’s yellow?”
Lily drew petals.
“A flower.”
Grant looked toward the garden.
Sunflowers.
Olivia’s old flower bed.
Green stems.
Yellow circles.
Blue rectangle.
Not the attic wardrobe.
A blue garden bench.
Grant’s pulse changed.
The bench still sat beneath the old pear tree.
He carried Lily outside.
She pointed immediately.
“Mommy.”
Grant knelt beside the bench.
Underneath, hidden behind a wooden slat, was a second keyhole.
Same blue key.
The panel opened.
Inside lay a tiny black memory card.
Nothing else.
Olivia had split the evidence.
The steel box was what Marcus knew about.
The bench was what he didn’t.
Grant looked at Lily.
“How did you remember?”
She shrugged.
“Mommy said flowers keep secrets.”
Then she ran toward the porch.
Grant remained crouched.
For two years, everyone assumed Lily’s silence meant she remembered nothing.
In reality, memory had been sitting inside her without language.
Grant loaded the card into an offline device.
One video.
Poor angle.
Night.
Kitchen hallway.
Olivia had placed the camera low.
Marcus entered first.
Renata behind him.
Then Peter Cole.
Gray hair.
Hard face.
The video caught everything before the stairs.
Peter:
“Where’s the key?”
Olivia:
“Somewhere you’ll never touch.”
Renata:
“Stop being dramatic.”
Peter:
“Grant needs us.”
Olivia:
“No. You need him afraid.”
Marcus:
“Same result.”
Then Olivia:
“You used my daughter.”
Grant froze.
Peter smiled on the recording.
“One frightened kid and Grant doubles security.”
Renata laughed.
“And one crying wife makes him easier to distract.”
Grant’s face went cold.
Then Olivia said:
“I told Victor.”
Peter’s expression changed.
Marcus moved toward her.
The recording became chaotic.
Footsteps.
Renata shouting.
Then one line from Peter:
“Get the child.”
The video cut.
Grant stood.
Not Lily by accident.
They had intended to use her that night.
He called Victor.
“Peter is alive.”
Victor answered immediately.
“I know.”
Grant went still.
Silence.
Victor continued:
“He contacted me this morning.”
Grant’s voice dropped.
“What did he say?”
“He wants the key.”
Grant looked at the blue key in his hand.
Victor continued.
“And he says if you don’t give it to him, Lily finally learns what happened after the stairs.”
Grant’s face hardened.
May you like
Peter thought the child still did not know enough.
He was wrong.
