Chapter 10

The ambush on Route 9 was a masterclass in brutal, overwhelming violence. The heavily wooded stretch of road was pitch black, the tall pines blocking out the moonlight as the four unmarked SUVs belonging to the Barzini family rolled slowly through the bottleneck. They were confident, entirely unaware that they were driving directly into a meticulously prepared slaughter.

Hidden in the dense tree line, Malcolm Ashford waited with cold, absolute patience. His tailored dark three-piece suit blended seamlessly into the shadows. He watched the headlights of the convoy pierce the darkness, his deep, piercing eyes tracking the lead vehicle. He raised his radio.

"Now," Malcolm whispered.

Simultaneously, two massive, armored utility trucks violently rammed the lead and trail SUVs from hidden side access roads. The deafening crunch of crushing metal echoed through the forest as the Barzini convoy was instantly trapped, sandwiched between the heavy trucks.

Before the stunned hitters inside the vehicles could even unbuckle their seatbelts, the tree line erupted in blinding muzzle flashes.

Malcolm stepped out from the shadows, his tactical handgun raised, firing with devastating, mechanical precision. The quiet, terrifying Mafia boss had fully unleashed the monster that built his empire. The firefight was deafening, but it was incredibly brief. Trapped in the kill zone, the Barzini hitters stood absolutely no chance against the prepared, coordinated assault of the Ashford loyalists.

Within minutes, the chaotic gunfire faded into a heavy, ringing silence, broken only by the hiss of steam escaping from the ruined radiators of the SUVs.

Malcolm walked slowly past the smoking wreckage, his polished leather shoes crunching over shattered glass and spent shell casings. His men quickly secured the area, ensuring there were no survivors to report back to New York. The message to the Commission would be delivered not in words, but in the complete, utter annihilation of their strike force.

Elias stepped up beside Malcolm, his face smeared with soot, breathing heavily. "It's done, Boss. The convoy is neutralized. We took zero casualties."

"Good," Malcolm replied smoothly, his breathing perfectly even, his suit remarkably untouched by the chaos. He holstered his weapon. "Clean it up. Burn the vehicles and bury the rest deep in the woods. Leave nothing for the authorities to find."

"And the Barzini family?" Elias asked nervously. "They will retaliate when these men don't report back."

"Let them try," Malcolm said, his voice carrying the absolute, chilling confidence of an undisputed king. "They wanted to test my resolve. Now they know what happens when they threaten my bloodline. The war has begun, Elias, and we have just fired the first shot."

Malcolm turned his back on the carnage, walking slowly back toward the hidden vehicles waiting to take him back to the estate. The immediate threat was eliminated, but the larger storm was rapidly approaching. The underworld would be thrown into chaos, alliances would shatter, and blood would spill across the eastern seaboard.

But as Malcolm slid into the back of his armored sedan, his thoughts immediately returned to the secure bunker beneath his wine cellar. The war with the Commission was inevitable, but his only true priority was the fragile, terrified boy waiting for him in the dark.

He had protected Caleb today, but the boy's innocence had been violently stripped away by the cruelty of his own family. The scars, both physical and emotional, would take a long time to heal. Malcolm knew he had to build an empire so terrifying, so absolutely impenetrable, that no one would ever dare look at his son with malice again.

As the sedan sped through the dark forest back toward the heavily fortified Ashford estate, Malcolm looked out the window, his deep eyes reflecting the passing shadows. The old guard was dead. The new era had begun, baptized in fire and blood. And Malcolm Ashford was just getting started.
