Chapter 2

The sharp, rapid chirping of the medical heart monitor cut through the ambient noise of the garden party like a siren. It was a sound Malcolm Ashford had been conditioned to hear over everything else in the world.
Malcolm stood on the nearby Mafia terrace, engaged in a tense conversation with two powerful politicians. At fifty-one, Malcolm was a force of nature. African American with medium-brown skin, he was extremely handsome, possessing a strong, angular face, prominent cheekbones, and a razor-sharp jawline framed by a neatly trimmed beard. His short black hair held a natural wave, and his deep, piercing eyes seemed to look straight through the souls of the men he commanded. Tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular, he exuded a commanding, deeply masculine presence that was entirely intimidating, carrying himself with the absolute authority of a seasoned Mafia boss. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit, an immaculate dress shirt, a heavy family signet ring, a wristwatch, and polished leather shoes.
Mid-sentence, the faint, frantic chirping reached his ears. Malcolm stopped speaking instantly. His piercing eyes snapped toward the edge of the terrace, locking onto the decorative stone column baking in the hot afternoon sun.
"Excuse me," Malcolm said abruptly, his deep voice carrying no room for argument.
He didn't walk; he rushed across the immaculate lawn, his polished leather shoes tearing through the expensive grass. The polished facade of the Mafia boss cracked, revealing the desperate, terrified father underneath. He covered the distance in seconds, pushing past a group of startled capos without a word of apology.
When Malcolm reached the stone column and saw his son, his heart plummeted. He immediately dropped to his knees beside Caleb, ignoring the dirt staining the knees of his expensive tailored trousers.
"Caleb! Caleb, look at me," Malcolm demanded urgently, his large, powerful hands gently cupping the boy's flushed, sweat-drenched face. The little boy’s torn, filthy clothes felt hot to the touch.
Caleb looked up at his father, his large brown eyes completely filled with absolute terror and pain. He was struggling to pull air into his fragile lungs, the heart monitor beneath his shirt screaming its rapid warning. Tears streamed through the dirt on his cheeks, leaving muddy tracks behind.
"Daddy..." Caleb sobbed through his tears, speaking brokenly between shallow, frantic hiccups. His tiny hands reached out, clutching weakly at the lapels of Malcolm's dark suit. "Help me. My chest hurts, Daddy. Help me."
"I've got you. Daddy's right here," Malcolm murmured, his deep voice thick with emotion as he tried to calm the child's racing heart. "You're going to be okay. Just breathe for me, Caleb. Just breathe."

Malcolm looked down and finally saw the short, heavy metal chain securing his son's ankle to the stone column. The thick steel links bit into the boy's delicate skin, leaving an angry red welt. The absolute cruelty of chaining a child with a heart condition in the scorching sun was unfathomable.
Malcolm slowly turned his head, his deep, piercing eyes locking onto Evelyn, who was still standing nearby, adjusting the pearls around her neck. The terror in Malcolm's eyes vanished entirely, replaced instantly by a cold, calculating, and utterly lethal fury. The temperature around them seemed to drop twenty degrees.
