Chapter 5

Evelyn’s fair, rosy skin had turned a ghastly shade of pale white. She stared in absolute horror at the wreckage of the wooden garden trellis, where her son Vincent lay completely motionless beneath the splintered wood, shattered clay pots, and dark soil. The untouchable matriarch of the Ashford family was finally realizing that her status offered absolutely no protection against a father’s wrath.
But old habits die hard, and Evelyn’s deeply ingrained arrogance quickly fought its way through her shock. She could not allow herself to be humiliated in front of the entire family and the assembled capos. Her reputation rested on absolute authority.
Her shock contorted into frantic, desperate malice. She whipped her head around to face Malcolm, her eyes blazing with fury.
"You savage!" Evelyn shrieked, her voice shrill and trembling with rage. "You dare strike my son? I will have you stripped of your rank! I will have you killed! You hear me? Killed!"
Malcolm didn't respond. He simply stared at her with deep, piercing eyes, utterly unmoved by her threats. His silence only infuriated her further.
Losing whatever fragile grip she had left on her composure, Evelyn lunged forward. Her elegant garden-party dress swished wildly around her ankles as she closed the distance. Her eyes locked entirely on the terrified child still clutched securely against Malcolm's broad chest.
"Give me that miserable rat!" Evelyn screamed, reaching her hands out viciously toward Caleb, aiming to grab the boy by his filthy, torn clothes and rip him from his father's protective embrace.
It was the final mistake she would ever make.
Malcolm turned his body slightly, shielding Caleb completely from her reaching hands. Without a word, without a single hesitation, Malcolm delivered one thunderous, open-handed slap directly across Evelyn’s face.
The sound was deafening, a sharp, echoing crack that silenced the entire estate. The force of the blow was staggering, carrying the full weight of a man pushed entirely past his breaking point.
Evelyn’s head snapped violently to the side, her heavy pearl necklace breaking under the sheer force. Expensive pearls scattered across the grass like bullets. She spun several steps backward, completely losing her footing in her high heels, her arms waving frantically as she tried to catch her balance.
She slammed violently into the stacked terracotta planter display positioned near the stone column.
The entire stack collapsed instantly around her. Large, empty, heavy terracotta pots tumbled downward in a chaotic avalanche. They struck the hard stone surface and shattered into dozens of sharp, jagged pieces. Evelyn fell hard into the center of the destruction, shrieking as the heavy pots crashed around her.
Loose flowers, thick dark soil, and broken clay spilled completely across her elegant garden-party gown and her expensive heels, burying her in the dirt she had tried to force Caleb to suffer in.

The entire garden party became completely silent. The ambient music playing from the terrace speakers seemed to fade into nothingness. Not a single capo moved. Not a single bodyguard reached for a weapon. The matriarch of the Ashford family was sitting in the dirt, covered in soil and broken pottery, humiliated and broken.
There was no dialogue. Only the rapid, steady chirping of Caleb's heart monitor, slowly beginning to stabilize as he felt the absolute, unwavering protection of his father.
