Chapter 6

The silence stretching across the immaculate lawns of the Mafia estate was absolute and suffocating. Malcolm Ashford stood tall amidst the wreckage of the afternoon, the undisputed master of the chaos he had just unleashed. He cradled Caleb securely in his left arm, his large hand gently stroking the back of the little boy's head to soothe him. The child’s breathing was finally slowing down, the rapid chirping of the medical heart monitor beneath his torn shirt steadying into a more regular, manageable rhythm.
Malcolm looked down at Evelyn. The senior matriarch of the Ashford family was a pathetic sight, sprawled awkwardly among the shattered remains of the terracotta planters. Her fair, rosy skin was smeared with dark soil, her elegant garden-party gown ruined by dirt and crushed flower petals. She pushed herself up onto her elbows, her chest heaving as she stared up at Malcolm, her eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and absolute terror.
For the first time in her long, privileged life, Evelyn realized she was entirely powerless.
Malcolm took a slow, deliberate step forward, his polished leather shoes crunching ominously over the shattered pieces of terracotta. He towered over her, his broad-shouldered, muscular frame blocking out the hot afternoon sun, casting a long, dark shadow entirely over her trembling body.
"You called it a small punishment," Malcolm said, his voice quiet, measured, and absolutely lethal. Every word was perfectly enunciated, carrying the weight of a death sentence. "Now remember mine."
Evelyn’s face became instantly frightened. The arrogant, cruel smirk that had been plastered on her face earlier was entirely gone, replaced by the stark, undeniable realization that her life was no longer in her own hands.
"Malcolm... please," Evelyn choked out, her voice trembling uncontrollably as she looked around desperately for help. But the capos and bodyguards remained frozen in place, their eyes averted. No one was going to step in to save her from the boss's wrath. "I... I am your aunt. I am family."
"Family protects its own," Malcolm replied coldly, his deep, piercing eyes utterly devoid of mercy. "You tortured a sick child. You chained my son to a rock like a dog. You are not family, Evelyn. You are a disease."
Evelyn scrambled backward slightly, cutting her hands on the broken pottery, but she couldn't escape his looming shadow. "The Commission won't allow this! You can't just attack the matriarch! They will strip you of your power!"
"Let them try," Malcolm whispered, his tone chillingly calm. He adjusted his tailored dark suit with his free hand, completely unfazed by her empty threats. "I built this empire, Evelyn. I control the ports, I control the politicians, and I control the guns. The Commission needs me far more than they need a bitter old woman whose only talent is cruelty."
He looked past her, toward the terrified capos who were watching the scene unfold. Malcolm didn't raise his voice, but his command echoed clearly across the silent garden.
"Marcus," Malcolm called out, his voice sharp and authoritative.
A massive, heavily scarred bodyguard stepped out from the crowd immediately, bowing his head respectfully. "Yes, Boss."
"Take Vincent to the infirmary. Make sure he survives," Malcolm ordered, his eyes never leaving Evelyn. "Then strip him of his rank and lock him in the cellar. As for Evelyn... confine her to the east wing. No phone calls, no visitors, no contact with the outside world. She is dead to this family as of today."

"No! You can't do this to me!" Evelyn shrieked, struggling frantically as Marcus and another bodyguard hauled her roughly to her feet, ignoring her ruined dress.
Malcolm simply turned his back on her, walking away as her screams echoed over the silent estate, his only concern entirely focused on the fragile life beating against his chest.
