Chapter 12 - The old valet

The valet’s name was Marcus Reed.

Not related to anyone.

Twenty-six at the time of the incident.

Now thirty.

Police had a report.

Arthur argued about his car.

Shoved Marcus once in the chest.

Marcus stumbled into another vehicle.

Elbow cut.

Vehicle scratched.

No serious injury.

Arthur apologized before officers arrived.

Charles paid the vehicle repair through insurance.

Arthur paid Marcus’s urgent-care bill voluntarily.

Marcus declined prosecution.

Why?

“I didn’t want to spend months dealing with a rich guy’s family.”

There.

When an investigator contacted him regarding pattern evidence, Marcus agreed to speak.

He did not suddenly claim Arthur nearly killed him.

Good.

“It was one shove.”

“Were you threatened not to report?”

“No.”

“Paid to stay silent?”

“No.”

“Why decline charges?”

“His dad kept saying Arthur would pay everything and get help.”

Again.

Compassion as closure.

Marcus said:

“I figured maybe the guy had one bad night.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Apparently everybody got one bad night.”

There.

That became the title of my family pattern in my mind.

May you like

One bad night.

Repeated indefinitely.
