Chapter 26 - One bad night

Arthur moved to Boston.

Worked in fundraising consulting.

No direct reports at first.

Continued therapy voluntarily.

No new criminal charges.

No workplace aggression report that I knew of.

I did not monitor him.

That was important.

One year after moving, he called.

“I had a bad meeting.”

“What happened?”

“Guy insulted me.”

“And?”

“I left.”

I waited.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

He laughed.

“I sat in my car shaking for twenty minutes.”

“But you left.”

“Yes.”

There.

Maybe change.

No guarantee.

Arthur said:

“Do you know what Mom told me afterward?”

“What?”

“She said she was proud of me.”

I smiled slightly.

“Good.”

“Then Dad asked if I wanted a lawyer.”

I burst out laughing.

Arthur laughed too.

“Some things take longer.”

Family available joke.

Then his voice changed.

“Clara.”

“Yeah?”

“I keep thinking about what you said.”

“What?”

“Everyone is going to pay.”

I remembered.

Gold ribbon.

Gigi crying.

Victoria on the ground.

“I hate that sentence now.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted all of you destroyed.”

Arthur was quiet.

“Would’ve been easier.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“What happened was worse.”

I frowned.

“How?”

“We had to stay alive and know exactly which parts were ours.”

There.

That was the actual climax.

Not prison.

Not bankruptcy.

Not a family empire collapsing.

Arthur had to live without being reduced to a monster and therefore without being able to dismiss consequences as persecution.

Victoria had to love her son without protecting him from truth.

Charles had to keep money in his account while his adult child struggled.

I had to raise Gigi without teaching her that righteous anger made my own violence invisible.

That was harder than revenge.

More useful too.
