Chapter 9 - The deleted thread

Graham voluntarily gave investigators his message thread with Judith.
Why?
His lawyer advised cooperation in the assault investigation.
He was not charged.
Yet messages mattered.
Most were normal.
Groceries.
Business.
Birthdays.
Complaints about me.
Then after bathroom fall:
Graham:
You cannot grab Nora again.
Judith:
She slipped.
Graham:
She says you pushed her.
Judith:
She was hysterical. I steadied her.
Graham:
I told urgent care she slipped. Leave it alone.
There.
Not medical-fraud charge.
But concealment.
Then Judith:
Good. Your wife looks for reasons to make me the enemy.
Garage incident:
Graham:
Why were you behind Nora outside?
Judith:
Because she stormed off after insulting me.
Graham:
She says you pulled her sweater.
Judith:
I did. She was walking away while I was speaking.
Graham:
She fell.
Judith:
She trips over air.
Then Graham:
This is exactly what I warned you about.
Judith:
Then stop bringing her around me when she can’t control herself.
There.
He knew she had physically grabbed me.
Then a message he had deleted from his visible phone but still existed in cloud backup produced with his consent/legal process.
Three months before stairs.
Judith:
If Nora ever turns this into police business, understand I will enforce the note immediately. I did not save Bennett Custom so your wife could destroy this family.
Graham:
Stop threatening me.
Judith:
It’s not a threat. It’s a loan.
Then:
You choose which family you protect.
There.
That sentence explained too much.
Then the night before the stair push.
Graham had argued with Judith.
Topic:
Me.
I had asked her to stop criticizing my spending.
Graham, unusually, took my side.
He texted:
Nora’s right. You don’t get to control our house because you loaned the company money.
Judith:
You’ll regret saying that.
Then current day.
No message announcing violence.
No premeditation.
But motive for her outburst:
“That’s the price for my son taking your side!”
It fit.
Then another thread between Graham and his business partner, Eli Porter.
Graham:
Mom put hands on Nora again.
Date:
Garage incident.
Eli:
Again?
Graham:
Bathroom thing was different. This time she grabbed her sweater and Nora fell.
Eli:
Get your mom out of the house.
Graham:
If I blow this up, she calls the note and we lose half the shop.
There.
Not just suspicion.
Knowledge.
Then:
Nora doesn’t know how tight the company still is.
Eli:
That’s not a reason to let this happen.
Graham:
I know.
May you like
He knew.
The question was how far that knowledge went.
