Chapter 23 - Madeline comes back to the house

Five months after the birthday, Madeline completed most of her diversion requirements.

Isla had not seen her.

Then Isla asked:

“Can Jenna—” Wrong name. Madeline. Need consistency. “Can Madeline give me my bracelet back?”

“What bracelet?”

The small friendship bracelet Isla wore at the party had come loose when Madeline shoved her.

Madeline found it later under the lounge chair.

Tessa had kept it.

I asked Isla:

“Do you want me to get it?”

“No. I want Madeline.”

Leah and I discussed.

Rachel Voss agreed a short meeting could be okay if Isla wanted and could leave.

Tessa brought Madeline.

No Vivian.

We met on the front patio.

Madeline held the bracelet in a small envelope.

“I found it after.”

Isla took it.

“Thanks.”

Silence.

Then Madeline:

“I’m sorry I smashed your cake.”

Isla:

“You already said sorry.”

Madeline nodded.

“I know.”

Then:

“I thought maybe I should say it when you were there.”

Isla looked at the bracelet.

“Why did you do it?”

“I was jealous.”

“Because of Vivian?”

“Partly.”

“Did she tell you to smash it?”

“No.”

“Then that part was you.”

Madeline looked down.

“Yes.”

Good.

No child hiding behind adult manipulation.

Then Isla:

“I don’t want you at my birthday next year.”

Fair.

Madeline’s eyes filled.

“Okay.”

Then:

“Maybe another time.”

Not forgiveness.

Not rejection forever.

A seven-year-old choosing pace.

They talked for fifteen minutes.

Mostly about school.

Madeline left.

No hug.

No photograph.

May you like

No wholesome recreation of the bad footage.

Just a returned bracelet.
