Chapter 12

The scheduled ransom message arrived at midnight anyway.

Automatic.

A distorted voice.

“Odessa is alive.”

A demand for eight million.

Instructions not to contact anyone.

A Hawthorne phrase deliberately included.

The entire thing sounded ridiculous now.

Earlier, under the right circumstances, it might have changed my life.

Context is powerful.

Same message.

Different knowledge.

I played it once.

Then deleted it.

Rafe asked:

“Keep a copy?”

“For what?”

“Records.”

“No.”

We had enough truth.

Not every lie deserves preservation.

The false message had one value left.

Showing me how easily emotion could replace verification.

Had I eaten the dessert, I would have awakened groggy.

My fiancée missing.

Her dress torn.

Bracelet broken.

Guests talking.

Marielle accused.

Hawthorne named.

Would I have slowed down?

I wanted to say yes.

Truth?

Maybe not.

That bothered me more than Gideon’s plan.

He had studied not just security.

Me.

My reputation.

My temper.

My instinct to respond quickly when family was threatened.

The scheme depended on Benedict Lockridge behaving like Benedict Lockridge.

So I changed something.

Not softness.

Sequence.

From that day forward, threats involving family triggered verification before retaliation.

Confirm person.

Confirm location.

Confirm source.

Then act.

My older captains complained.

One called it hesitation.

I answered:

“Hesitation is fear.”

“Verification is discipline.”

They stopped complaining when I told them how close we came to attacking the wrong family over a woman who had never been kidnapped.

Mafia tradition loves decisiveness.

Useful.

But decisiveness without truth is just speed in the wrong direction.
