Chapter 13

Gideon lost the vineyard first.

Then two properties.

Then his city club membership.

The last part apparently hurt most.

Human priorities remain strange.

I did not intervene.

Odessa moved into a modest apartment.

Modest by her standards.

Still nicer than Marielle’s childhood home, I suspect.

No tragedy.

No revenge.

Just a life without the status she nearly drugged me to preserve.

Months later she requested a meeting.

I accepted.

Daylight.

Neutral restaurant.

No ring.

She looked different.

Not poorer.

Smaller somehow.

Less surrounded by certainty.

“My father still says you betrayed us.”

I almost smiled.

“How?”

“By refusing to help.”

“There it is.”

She looked embarrassed.

Gideon still believed marriage meant automatic rescue.

My engagement to Odessa had apparently become an asset on his private balance sheet without my knowledge.

She finally saw it too.

“He never thought of you as my husband.”

“We never married.”

“You know what I mean.”

I did.

“He thought of you as the solution.”

“Yes.”

“And I let him.”

There.

Then she asked about Marielle.

“She left.”

Pain crossed Odessa’s face.

“Because of me.”

“Yes.”

No comfort.

“I wanted to apologize.”

“She doesn’t owe you access.”

“I know.”

Good.

Odessa stared at her coffee.

“I keep thinking about the spoon.”

“What about it?”

“I was willing to put it in her mouth.”

Her voice broke.

“To prove a lie.”

That was the moment she hated most.

Not the suitcase.

Not ransom.

Not family debt.

The physical immediacy of using another woman’s body to make the evidence disappear.

Good.

Remorse should eventually become specific.

General regret is comfortable.

Specific regret changes behavior.

We finished coffee.

No reconciliation.

No promise.

When she left, I noticed she paid for her own drink.

Small.

May you like

Ordinary.

Probably the first thing all day that belonged entirely to her.
