Chapter 16

Odessa eventually apologized to Marielle.
Two years later.
Not in person.
A letter.
Marielle told me because we had remained occasional acquaintances through estate events.
She did not show me the whole thing.
Only one sentence.
I chose you because I thought nobody important would believe you before they believed me.
That was the correct apology.
No childhood.
No father.
No debt.
No “I was desperate.”
Just the logic of the harm.
Marielle wrote back once.
One sentence too.
You were wrong about who was important.
I liked that.
She asked if it sounded arrogant.
“No.”
Then I corrected myself.
“Why are you asking me?”
She laughed.
“Habit.”
Old hierarchies linger in harmless ways too.
Odessa never contacted her again.
Good.
Gideon died the following year.
Natural causes.
No empire restored.
No dramatic curse.
Julian built a smaller life outside the old family properties.
Odessa began working with one of his businesses.
Ordinary consequence.
Survival without theater.
I never married her.
Never tried again with her.
Some relationships can survive mistakes.
Others reveal their design under pressure.
Ours had.
She needed marriage to secure certainty.

I needed a partner who could bring me an ugly truth before turning it into a beautiful lie.
That was not us.
