Chapter 9

Odessa asked to speak alone.

I said Marielle stayed.

That angered her.

Good.

“This is between us.”

“No.”

I looked toward Marielle.

“You put her inside it.”

Odessa closed her eyes.

Fair.

She removed her engagement ring.

Not dramatically.

Slowly.

Placed it on the table beside the clean spoon.

Interesting composition.

“What do you want me to say?”

“The truth.”

“I loved you.”

“I believe you.”

She looked surprised.

People expect betrayal to erase love retroactively.

It doesn’t.

That would be easier.

“I thought if my father lost everything, you’d see my family as weak.”

“Did I ever say that?”

“No.”

“Then whose shame was that?”

She looked toward Gideon in the next room.

There.

Inherited.

Gideon raised Odessa to believe poverty was exposure.

Dependence was humiliation.

Asking for help meant surrendering control.

When the Bellamy finances collapsed, Odessa could not imagine telling me.

Not because I would refuse.

Because accepting help honestly would mean I knew she needed it.

So she preferred manipulation.

“What about Marielle?”

Odessa looked at her.

“I needed someone who could plausibly have touched the dessert.”

“That explains selection.”

I paused.

“Not cruelty.”

Marielle’s eyes remained on her.

Odessa cried.

“I kept telling myself she would be cleared.”

Marielle finally answered.

“By you.”

Odessa nodded.

“After he woke up.”

Another nod.

“So I just had to be terrified until then?”

Odessa covered her mouth.

There.

Plans are clean when victims exist only as steps.

Messy when they speak.

Marielle continued.

“You knew I send money to my mother.”

Odessa froze.

I looked at Marielle.

Her mother had chronic mobility problems and depended partly on her wages.

No medical detail needed.

Just dependency.

“If I lost my job…”

Her voice broke.

Odessa whispered:

“I know.”

Worse.

She had not chosen a maid whose life she knew nothing about.

She chose one knowing exactly how fragile the consequences could become.

I looked at the ring.

“Our engagement is over.”

Odessa nodded.

May you like

No argument.

At least she had reached the part of the night where truth required no performance.
