Chapter 1

“Hold onto that bowl. You’ll be eating from it soon.”
My voice stayed low.
Bianca’s face lost its color.
The metal bowl was still spinning across the marble when I lifted Sophie into my chair at the head of the table. Her little legs did not reach the floor. Tears clung to her eyelashes while she stared at the dinner plate Bianca had given to the dog.
Two of my guards stepped behind my aunt.
Nobody else moved.
That was when my anger changed.
Bianca had humiliated my daughter.
But fifteen adults had watched her do it.
I looked around the table.
Some lowered their eyes.
Others stared at their food.
One of my older cousins slowly set down his fork.
Sophie touched my sleeve.
“Daddy?”
I crouched beside her.
“Yes?”
Her voice became smaller.
“Can I eat now?”
Something inside me went cold.
Not can I have my dinner back?
Can I eat now.
I looked toward Bianca.
She saw the question forming before I asked it.
“How many times?”
She lifted her chin.
“I don’t know what you mean.”
Sophie did.
Her fingers tightened around mine.
“Aunt Bianca says I eat when she says.”
The room went silent.
I looked at my daughter.
“When?”
“When you’re in the meeting room.”
Bianca stood.
“She is three. She misunderstands discipline.”
I did not look at her.
“Sophie, what happens if you cry?”
My daughter hesitated.
That hesitation answered first.
Then she whispered:
“No dessert.”
A woman near the far end of the table closed her eyes.
I noticed.
“What happens if you don’t finish?”
Sophie stared at the dog bowl.
Bianca snapped:
“Enough.”
I stood slowly.
“No.”
My voice barely rose.
“That word belonged to you while I wasn’t looking.”
I turned toward the family.
“Anyone who has watched Bianca feed my daughter from that bowl and said nothing stays seated.”
Three people immediately stood.
Then four more.
They left.
Eight remained.
Bianca stared at them.
I counted every face.
My rage became quieter.

Because cruelty done in secret belonged to one person.
Cruelty repeated in a room full of witnesses had become a family rule.
