Chapter 10

My father had removed Bianca from the household once.

I never knew.

I had been nineteen.

Away for six months with a southern crew.

When I returned, Bianca was back.

Nobody mentioned anything.

“Why did he remove you?”

She did not answer.

Matteo did.

“Because of me.”

I turned.

He stood in the doorway.

His face looked exhausted.

“What happened?”

He looked at Bianca.

She said nothing.

So he did.

“When I was twelve, I stole food.”

The words came flat.

“I had been forbidden dinner because I spoke during a family meeting.”

My chest tightened.

Same system.

“Your father found me eating in the pantry.”

He expected punishment.

Instead my father asked why he was hungry.

Matteo could not answer.

So Antonio Vitale watched.

Then discovered Bianca had been withholding food regularly.

My father exploded.

He removed her from household authority.

“What changed?”

Matteo looked ashamed.

“I asked him to bring her back.”

I understood.

Of course.

A child trained to depend on the person hurting him often fears losing them more than the pain.

Bianca returned.

Under conditions.

No discipline over children.

No control over meals.

No private punishment.

Rules that apparently died with my father.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

Matteo laughed bitterly.

“Because we called it family shame.”

There it was.

Hide abuse to protect the family’s image.

Then the pattern survives.

I looked at Bianca.

“You did this to him.”

She snapped:

“I made him strong.”

Matteo flinched.

I saw it.

She did not.

Or refused to.

“You starved a twelve-year-old.”

“He was disrespectful.”

“He was hungry.”

“He survived.”

Same sentence.

Always survival as permission.

Matteo sat.

“I used to think being hungry meant I was becoming disciplined.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“I was proud when I stopped asking for food.”

Bianca looked disgusted.

“Don’t embarrass yourself.”

He stared at her.

Something finally broke.

Not loudly.

He removed his capo pin and placed it on the table.

“I spent twenty-nine years calling what you did training because the alternative was admitting I was afraid of my aunt.”

Bianca stood.

“Pick that up.”

May you like

He did not.

For the first time, the boy she raised disobeyed her without looking for permission afterward.
