Chapter 16

Bianca returned at Christmas.

Not because I invited her to dinner.

Sophie did.

I nearly said no.

Then remembered my own rules.

Her relationship.

Her choice.

Bianca arrived early and stood in the entrance hall holding a wrapped gift.

No pearls.

No entourage.

No household keys.

Sophie hid behind my leg when she saw her.

Bianca’s face changed.

That reaction hurt her more than anything I could have done.

Good.

Not because I wanted pain.

Because consequences become real when the person harmed is allowed to react honestly.

Bianca crouched.

Not too close.

“I brought you something.”

Sophie looked at me.

“Your choice.”

She stayed behind me.

“No.”

Bianca swallowed.

Then placed the gift on a side table.

“Okay.”

One word.

Maybe the first time she accepted a child’s no without punishment.

We did not celebrate it.

The bar was underground.

Later, during dinner, Bianca sat at the far end.

Sophie sat beside me in her small chair.

Bruno slept beneath the table.

His metal bowl remained in the kitchen.

Halfway through dinner Sophie dropped a fork.

The room went quiet.

Instinct.

Old memory.

Sophie looked around.

Then froze.

I saw it.

Bianca saw it too.

Nobody moved.

I picked up another fork and handed it to her.

“That one escaped.”

Sophie giggled.

The room breathed again.

Bianca looked down at her plate.

A few minutes later, Sophie whispered:

“Can Bruno have chicken?”

I nodded.

She carried one small piece to the kitchen.

Bianca watched her go.

Then said quietly:

“She’s not afraid of you.”

“No.”

“How do you make her listen?”

I looked at her.

The question was sincere.

That was almost sad.

“I don’t always.”

She frowned.

“And that’s acceptable?”

“Yes.”

Bianca looked toward the kitchen.

Years of belief shifting one millimeter.

Not redemption.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

May you like

But a question where certainty used to be.

Sometimes that is the only opening change gets.
