Chapter 14

The dining room stayed closed for a week.

Not by order.

Sophie would not enter.

I did not force her.

We ate breakfast in the kitchen.

Lunch in my office.

Dinner on the terrace.

The capos adjusted.

The world did not end.

One evening Sophie asked:

“Why don’t we eat at big table?”

I answered honestly.

“Because you don’t like it right now.”

She frowned.

“But you like it.”

“Yes.”

She thought about that.

Then asked:

“Can Daddy eat there without me?”

I almost laughed.

“Of course.”

She nodded.

Apparently the problem was solved.

I had been treating the dining room like a symbol we needed to reclaim together.

Sophie saw furniture.

Again, children simplified.

A few days later I ate there alone.

The chair beside me remained empty.

No dog bowl.

No grand gesture.

Just dinner.

Matteo passed the doorway.

He stopped.

“You okay?”

“No.”

He nodded.

Then left.

Good.

We were getting better at not fixing every admission of pain.

Later Sophie appeared in pajamas.

She stayed at the doorway.

I put down my fork.

“You want to come in?”

She shook her head.

“Can Bruno?”

Our dog.

I smiled.

“Yes.”

Bruno walked in and sat near the wall.

Sophie watched.

“Where’s his bowl?”

“In the kitchen.”

She considered that.

Then stepped inside.

One step.

Then another.

She sat in my lap.

No dinner.

No pressure.

We stayed there five minutes.

Then she left.

That was enough.

Healing did not need to look impressive.

The next night she came back with crackers.

The night after that, she asked for pasta.

By the end of the week she sat in her own chair.

Not mine.

Her own.

I had ordered a smaller chair made to fit beside mine.

When she saw it, she looked suspicious.

“Mine?”

“Yes.”

“Always?”

“As long as you want it.”

She climbed up.

Then looked at me.

“Can Bruno sit too?”

I looked under the table.

The mastiff already had.

I sighed.

“Apparently.”

She laughed.

The room sounded different with laughter.

May you like

Not conquered.

Changed.
