Chapter 10

The audit timeline took another week to reconstruct.

When it was finished, Caroline called Alessio and Sylvia into her office.

She placed three dates on a screen.

The first was Sylvia’s original emergency advance.

The second was the day she told Trent she would no longer approve informal payments.

The third was the night her arm was broken.

Then Caroline added the draft disclosure Trent had discovered on Sylvia’s phone.

“This wasn’t an attack because Sylvia found the fraud.”

Alessio looked at her.

Caroline continued.

“Trent knew she understood the fraud months ago.”

Sylvia said nothing.

“The bathroom attack happened because she decided to confess.”

That changed the meaning of nearly everything.

The phone Sylvia refused to surrender did not merely contain evidence against Trent.

It contained evidence against herself.

The proxy was not only about Raymond’s new contract.

If Trent controlled Sylvia’s vote for ninety days, he could keep her away from the board while presenting their financial arrangement as something she continued to support.

And the two security men were not there simply to restrain a difficult wife.

Raymond had been warned that Sylvia intended to make a disclosure during the club gathering.

He stationed his own men upstairs to prevent her from reaching the council meeting before the proxy was signed.

Even Trent’s words at the bathroom door now meant something different.

Nobody is coming for you this time.

He knew Sylvia had previously tried to reach Alessio indirectly.

He also knew her shame had stopped her every time.

He believed shame would stop her again.

The major deception had never been convincing Sylvia that she was innocent.

It had been convincing her that because she was not completely innocent, she had no right to expose what they were doing to her.

Alessio sat back.

For days he had been trying to divide the story into good people and bad choices.

The truth refused.

Sylvia had broken financial rules willingly.

Trent had used that mistake to manipulate, steal from, isolate, and eventually assault her.

Raymond had protected his son and his company by helping turn Sylvia’s guilt into leverage.

And Alessio had created the family atmosphere that made admitting a mistake feel more dangerous than hiding one.

Sylvia looked at her brother.

“I need to amend my disclosure.”

“If you do, they’ll use it against you.”

“I know.”

“You could lose the board seat permanently.”

“I know.”

She opened her laptop.

Alessio understood the immediate choice.

He could use his power to protect his sister’s reputation.

Or he could finally stop confusing protection with concealment.

“Send the whole thing,” he said.
