Chapter 8

Sylvia sent the disclosure herself the next morning.

Not a softened version.

Not one written by public relations.

She admitted authorizing the original unapproved advance.

She explained why.

She disclosed Trent’s later demands, the suspected misuse of her credentials, the proxy, and the violence.

Caroline warned her before she hit send.

“This could cost you your board seat.”

“I know.”

“It could create a claim that you breached fiduciary duties.”

“I know.”

“You could have waited until the audit was finished.”

Sylvia looked at her.

“I’ve been waiting for three years.”

She pressed send.

The effect was immediate.

The board temporarily suspended Sylvia’s voting authority pending review.

Raymond’s contract renewal was postponed.

Two banks requested clarification about the disputed invoices.

An insurer asked whether Moretti Hospitality had adequate internal controls.

Trent’s attorney issued a statement to the board portraying Sylvia as emotionally unstable after “a troubled marriage.”

Then Trent formally filed an assault complaint against Alessio.

Raymond did the same.

Alessio gave his statement.

He did not omit the punch.

He did not omit pushing Raymond.

Caroline had prepared him for the question.

“Did you believe your sister faced immediate danger?”

“Yes.”

“After she was behind you?”

Alessio paused.

That was where certainty became harder.

“I was angry.”

He hated saying it.

It was true.

Meanwhile Sylvia petitioned for an order of protection through her attorney.

The court process did not happen instantly.

There were filings.

Statements.

A temporary hearing.

Trent was ordered not to contact her directly while the matter proceeded.

That evening Raymond requested a meeting with Alessio.

No lawyers, he insisted.

Alessio refused.

Raymond came to Caroline’s office instead.

He brought a proposed settlement.

Nearly one million dollars repaid.

Trent would resign.

Raymond would withdraw his complaint against Alessio.

In exchange, Sylvia would retract the abuse allegations and the family would keep the financial investigation internal.

Alessio read the proposal.

Then handed it to Sylvia.

Raymond looked surprised.

“This is between men.”

Sylvia stared at him.

“No.”

She pushed the papers back.

“This is the first time it isn’t.”
