Chapter 6

Alessio did not call Sylvia for the rest of that day.

Not because he blamed her.

Because he did not know how to speak without defending himself.

Caroline eventually told him to stop being ridiculous.

“You built a family culture where mistakes are hidden until they become emergencies.”

“I never told her she couldn’t come to me.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Alessio stared at her.

“You fire people for embarrassing you.”

“I fire people for lying.”

“And if everybody thinks admitting a mistake will look like lying?”

He had no answer.

At the hotel, Sylvia removed her wedding ring.

She placed it inside an envelope rather than throwing it away.

Then she retained her own divorce attorney.

Alessio learned through Caroline.

For once, he did not interfere.

The forensic audit delivered its first preliminary findings.

The original $40,000 payment Sylvia authorized was improper under internal policy but corresponded to real future services.

The next three payments also had legitimate services behind them, although documentation was weak.

Then the pattern changed.

Invoices multiplied.

Hours were duplicated.

Guard names appeared at locations where access logs showed they had never entered.

After that point, more than $900,000 appeared questionable.

Trent’s credentials submitted most of those invoices.

Sylvia’s account approved many.

The technical team found evidence that her authentication token had been added to Trent’s office laptop.

“When?” Alessio asked.

“Ten months ago.”

Sylvia immediately remembered.

Trent had told her his laptop could not access a family calendar and asked her to sign in.

One ordinary request.

Ten seconds.

Enough to preserve her authorization session.

Caroline cautioned them.

“That explains how he could submit approvals. It doesn’t prove which ones he personally did.”

Sylvia nodded.

“Then we prove it.”

Alessio looked at her.

She had stopped sounding like someone hoping to survive scandal.

She sounded like someone willing to accept her part in it.

That afternoon Raymond sent Sylvia a message through his lawyer.

Return the money you authorized personally.

Withdraw the abuse allegations.

Raymond would make the rest disappear.

Sylvia forwarded the offer to Caroline.

May you like

Then she sent Alessio one sentence.

I’m done helping people make things disappear.
