Chapter 12

The formal family confrontation took place at Caroline’s office.

Trent sat beside his lawyer.

Raymond sat beside separate counsel.

Sylvia sat across from them with her attorney.

Alessio sat farther back.

For once, he was not controlling the room.

Caroline began with the timeline.

Raymond interrupted twice.

Trent interrupted five times.

Sylvia waited.

Finally Trent turned directly toward her.

“You started the payments.”

“Yes.”

His confidence sharpened.

“You hid them from Alessio.”

“Yes.”

“You told me to use your approval.”

“For legitimate advances.”

“You never said that.”

“I said it every time.”

Trent smiled.

“Prove it.”

Sylvia looked at him for several seconds.

Then she asked, “Did I make you break my arm too?”

His smile disappeared.

“That was an accident.”

“You shoved me.”

“You grabbed me.”

“Because you took my phone.”

Raymond intervened.

“You two had a toxic marriage. That doesn’t make every business decision fraud.”

Alessio finally spoke.

“No. The records do that.”

Raymond turned toward him.

“You think this family survives if every mistake becomes evidence?”

Alessio stared at him.

“That’s what you were protecting?”

“I was protecting my company.”

Raymond’s voice rose for the first time.

“Men work there. Families depend on it. Trent made bad decisions because everything was collapsing.”

Trent looked at his father.

“You told me it was temporary.”

Raymond ignored him.

Sylvia asked quietly, “And me?”

Raymond looked at her.

“You had choices.”

“Yes.”

“I never told Trent to hurt you.”

“No.”

Sylvia glanced at her husband.

“You just kept making sure hurting me benefited both of you.”

Trent stood.

His lawyer pulled him back down.

“What I wanted,” Trent said, “was my wife to stop running to her brother every time she got scared.”

Sylvia looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice remained steady.

“You wanted me scared enough that I wouldn’t.”

That was the emotional center of it.

Not invoices.

Not proxies.

Control.

May you like

Trent looked away.

For the first time, he had no answer.
