Chapter 11

Gregory stopped denying the recordings after the technical reconstruction became undeniable.

He did not admit abuse.

Not at first.

He called it documentation.

The meeting took place with lawyers present.

Valeria sat across from him.

No Diane.

No family.

No bodyguards in the room.

Gregory looked exhausted.

“I never wanted to hurt him.”

“You locked him in a soundproof room.”

“For minutes.”

“You told him I would never find him.”

“I needed him to stop assuming you would fix everything.”

Valeria stared at him.

He heard himself.

His face changed.

But he continued.

“You still don’t understand what you’ve made normal.”

“Then explain it.”

“You have men with guns eating breakfast ten feet from him.”

“They’re security.”

“He doesn’t know the distinction.”

“He knows they protect him.”

“That is exactly what terrifies me.”

Gregory leaned forward.

“He thinks protection looks like men checking windows before he enters a restaurant.”

Valeria said nothing.

“He thinks seeing three black SUVs outside preschool is ordinary.”

Still nothing.

“He watched you leave his birthday last year because someone called about a shooting.”

Valeria remembered.

Twenty-three minutes.

She had returned before cake.

At the time, she considered that proof she balanced both worlds.

Gregory considered it proof she never would.

“I asked you to move business away from the house.”

“I moved half of it.”

“Half.”

“I changed security rotations.”

“There are still guards.”

“There will always be guards.”

Gregory laughed bitterly.

“That’s what I knew.”

Then Valeria asked the only question that mattered.

“So you frightened him deliberately?”

Gregory looked down.

“I thought if I could get him out, he’d recover.”

“You used his suffering as transportation.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Her voice remained quiet.

“You needed him hurt enough that a judge would believe you.”

Gregory’s eyes filled.

“I needed someone powerful enough to make you listen.”

“You had lawyers.”

“You own rooms before you walk into them.”

“Not courtrooms.”

“You think your name means nothing there?”

Valeria did not answer.

Because she knew Gregory had reason to fear her influence.

Again.

Motive.

Not excuse.

She leaned forward.

“You were allowed to leave me.”

He looked up.

“You were allowed to file for custody.”

Silence.

“You were allowed to tell a judge every true thing about my life.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You were not allowed to torture our son until your argument photographed better.”

Gregory began crying.

Valeria did not comfort him.

Some truths did not need soft delivery.
