Chapter 8

Valeria filed for legal separation.

The same morning, Rebecca filed for temporary custody orders.

Valeria also did something most people around her considered more dangerous than ending her marriage.

She opened the estate.

Not to everyone.

To an independent child-safety evaluator approved by the court.

To Noah’s guardian ad litem.

To outside security consultants.

To professionals who were allowed to ask whether Gregory had fabricated concerns—

and whether Valeria had created legitimate concerns of her own.

Her advisers hated it.

One capo came directly to her office.

“You’re inviting strangers to document how you live.”

“Yes.”

“They’ll see security.”

“Yes.”

“People.”

“Yes.”

“Schedules.”

“Yes.”

He lowered his voice.

“They may ask questions you don’t want asked.”

Valeria looked through the glass wall toward the courtyard where Noah was playing with a professional caregiver.

“My husband built a custody case in secret because he believed nobody could question me.”

The capo said nothing.

Valeria continued.

“If I answer that by making sure nobody can question me, I prove his point.”

The evaluator interviewed staff.

Reviewed rooms.

Inspected weapon-storage procedures.

Asked why business associates attended private events in the same home where Noah slept.

Asked how frequently Valeria traveled.

Asked how many different security personnel Noah interacted with in an ordinary week.

Some answers embarrassed her.

One finding was especially difficult.

Noah had learned a “safe floor” drill.

If armed security moved quickly through the estate, he had been taught to go with a nanny into an interior room and wait.

Valeria considered that excellent emergency planning.

The evaluator asked:

“Why does a three-year-old need this drill?”

Valeria had no answer that made ordinary childhood sound like hers.

That night she sat alone after Noah went to sleep.

Gregory’s methods were indefensible.

His concern was not entirely imaginary.

That distinction was going to matter.

Rebecca called.

“Gregory filed his response.”

“What does he want?”

“Temporary primary custody.”

Valeria closed her eyes.

“On what basis?”

“Dangerous household environment, excessive exposure to organized-crime associates, parental absences, and emotional harm.”

“The photographs?”

“He attached them.”

The staged images were now inside a court filing.

Gregory had finally used them for the purpose they appeared to have been created for.

Valeria’s decision to open the house had become irreversible.

Now she would have to defeat his lie without pretending her own life required no change.
