Chapter 7

Thomas reconstructed the bear-camera system.
It had never recorded continuously.
That was important.
Gregory controlled when it was active through an application on his phone.
The clips preserved on his tablet were selected manually.
No full archive existed on the camera itself.
But network logs showed when streams began and ended.
On eleven occasions, the camera activated shortly after Gregory took Noah upstairs.
Every stream began after Noah was already inside the panic room.
Every stream ended before Gregory opened the door.
That meant the recordings excluded the exact moments that explained why Noah was distressed.
No footage showed Gregory changing his clothes.
No footage showed Gregory placing the chair.
No footage showed Gregory closing the door.
The camera only captured the result.
A small child alone.
Dirty.
Crying.
Asking for his mother.
Rebecca looked at the pattern.
“Selective documentation.”
Valeria’s hands tightened.
“Manufactured documentation.”
“Maybe.”
Valeria gave her a look.
Rebecca did not change the word.
“Prove it.”
That became the next objective.
The clothes helped.
Thomas found purchase records through Gregory’s credit card.
A discount children’s clothing store.
Three sets in Noah’s size.
Purchased seven weeks earlier.
Two days before the first camera session.
Receipts alone did not prove he dirtied them deliberately.
Then the estate laundry supervisor remembered Gregory asking her not to wash a bag of “play clothes” stored in the upstairs dressing room.
He said they were for an outdoor project with Noah.
There had been no outdoor project.
Another staff member remembered Gregory rubbing fireplace ash on one shirt after asking how easily it washed out.
That was not conclusive by itself.
Combined with the photographs, it became difficult to explain innocently.
Then Noah said something to the child psychologist.
Not during interrogation.
During play.
He put a toy father figure beside a dollhouse.
Then placed the small child figure inside a box.
“What’s happening?” the psychologist asked.
“Daddy makes sad picture.”
“Why?”
“So lady says go with Daddy.”
The psychologist did not ask who the lady was.
Noah continued playing.
“Mom bad house.”
Valeria heard the report later.
She did not cry.
She became completely still.
Gregory had been talking about the purpose around Noah.
Maybe not explaining it.
Enough for a three-year-old to absorb fragments.
Sad picture.
Lady.
Go with Daddy.
Mom bad house.
Rebecca called it the most concerning disclosure yet.
But she still warned Valeria:
“A three-year-old’s play is not a confession from Gregory.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
May you like
Because the case could not depend on making Noah prove what adults had done.
The adults would have to prove it themselves.
