Chapter 12

The independent child-safety report criticized both parents.
That surprised Gregory.
It angered several Romanos.
Valeria accepted it.
The report found Gregory’s conduct posed an immediate emotional-safety concern.
Deliberate confinement.
Manipulation.
Secret recording.
False presentation of distress.
Attempts to involve Noah in adult custody strategy.
His unsupervised contact should remain suspended.
But the report also found Valeria’s household required significant changes.
Too much adult business occurred at the residence.
Too many security disruptions happened within Noah’s daily environment.
Several staff members could not clearly separate household responsibilities from business security.
Noah had been taught emergency procedures inappropriate for a child his age without therapeutic guidance.
One paragraph stayed with Valeria.
The father manufactured evidence of harm. This does not establish the absence of legitimate environmental concerns.
She read it three times.
Then reorganized her life.
Not overnight.
Not magically.
The Romano organization did not disappear because she discovered better parenting language.
But the estate changed.
No business meetings after six.
Then no business meetings at the residence at all.
Capos stopped using the house as an informal gathering point.
Security became less visible inside family spaces.
Armed personnel remained where professionally necessary but did not linger in rooms Noah used.
A separate legitimate office took over meetings previously held downstairs.
Valeria reduced travel.
Not to zero.
To something a three-year-old could understand.
When she left, Noah knew where she was going and when she would return.
The first time she told him she had an overnight trip, he grabbed her sleeve.
“Dad take me quiet?”
Valeria’s chest tightened.
“No.”
“Diane?”
“No.”
“Who?”
“Maria and Thomas will stay here. And I’ll call you before bed.”
Noah stared at her.
“Door stays open?”
“Yes.”
That night Valeria called three times.
The therapist later told her she was overcorrecting.
Valeria called only once the next trip.
Parenting, apparently, required tolerating uncertainty.
She disliked that almost as much as Rebecca’s legal advice.
Meanwhile, Diane requested a meeting with Valeria.
She came without jewelry.
Without the formal mask she normally wore.
“I should have stopped him.”
Valeria said nothing.
“I thought he was doing something terrible for the right reason.”
“That sentence is why you should not be near Noah yet.”
Diane nodded.
“I know.”
For once, she did not ask Valeria to understand.

That was the beginning of accountability.
Not forgiveness.
