Chapter 10

Anna had investigated Claudia for months.
Not because of the affair.
Because Claudia was not who she claimed to be.
Her maiden name was not Claudia Hayes.
It was Claudia Moretti.
Her father, Samuel Moretti, had once run a competing organization destroyed by Richard Bellacorte twenty-two years earlier.
Richard remembered him.
A violent man.
Ambitious.
Dangerous.
Richard’s men had dismantled his network after Samuel ordered an attack that killed two Bellacorte associates.
Samuel went to prison.
He died there.
Richard slowly looked toward Claudia.
Her face had gone blank.
Mark whispered:
“No.”
Claudia said nothing.
The letter continued.
Anna believed Claudia deliberately entered Mark’s life.
The affair was not random.
She had spent years approaching Bellacorte social circles under another name.
She encouraged Mark’s resentment.
Encouraged his financial independence.
Encouraged him to move money beyond Richard’s control.
Then she became his lover.
Anna suspected Claudia wanted access to the family from inside.
But Anna discovered something that changed the entire story.
Claudia was not trying to destroy Richard first.
She was trying to destroy Mark’s relationship with him.
Why?
Because Samuel Moretti’s downfall had not been caused only by Richard.
Mark, then sixteen, had unknowingly helped.
As a teenager, Mark found documents in Richard’s study and gave them to police after overhearing that Samuel had threatened the family.
The records helped prosecutors locate hidden accounts.
Samuel blamed Richard publicly.
Privately, he learned Mark had triggered the breakthrough.
Claudia grew up hearing that a Bellacorte son had destroyed her father.
She eventually found Mark.
But years of revenge changed.
She actually fell in love with him.
Anna’s letter said:
Claudia hates Richard, but she needs Mark to hate him more. I think revenge stopped being about killing anyone a long time ago. She wants Mark to become the son Richard can no longer recognize.
Richard looked at Mark.
His son sat motionless.
Everything shifted.
The hidden money.
The resentment.
The secret room.
The affair.
Even Mark’s cruelty toward Lily.
Claudia had spent years feeding one belief:
Richard controls you.
Richard thinks you are weak.
Richard owns everything you call yours.
And Mark had slowly built his entire adult identity around proving her right.
Then Richard reached the final paragraph.
Anna wrote that Claudia had asked a mechanic about “how easy it would be to make a crash look like weather.”
But Anna also wrote:
I confronted her. She swore she would never hurt me because Mark would never forgive her. I don’t know if I believe her.
The major twist did not prove Claudia killed Anna.
May you like
It proved the entire Bellacorte family had been living inside a revenge plan for years.
And Mark had married the woman who entered his life intending to turn him against his father.
