Chapter 13

The former operator remembered who gave him the instruction.

Not Claudia.

Not Mark.

Richard’s old consigliere, Vincent Hale.

Vincent had died the previous year.

But his archived notes remained.

Richard ordered them opened.

One entry from the night of Anna’s crash read:

A. CALLED. SHE KNOWS TOO MUCH ABOUT MARK’S MOVEMENTS. RICHARD MUST NOT SEE HER UNTIL WE CONTAIN IT.

Richard’s eyes hardened.

Vincent had acted without authorization.

Or claimed he had.

The next line was worse.

CONTACTED C. SHE AGREES ANNA NEEDS TO BE STOPPED FROM REACHING R.

C.

Claudia?

Richard looked at her.

She went pale.

Mark saw it.

“What did you do?”

Claudia’s breathing became shallow.

“I called Anna.”

Richard’s fingers tightened.

“When?”

“After Vincent contacted me.”

“What did you tell her?”

Claudia looked toward the floor.

“I told her Richard knew about the affair.”

Mark’s face hardened.

“And?”

“I told her you were with him.”

Mark stared.

Claudia continued.

“I wanted her to go home.”

“Why?”

“Because if she reached Richard, everything was over.”

There.

The affair.

The financial scheme.

Claudia’s identity.

All of it.

She called Anna to stop the meeting.

But did she cause the crash?

Claudia shook her head before anyone asked.

“She hung up on me.”

Her voice broke.

“I called back. She didn't answer.”

Richard studied her.

Then Vincent’s notes revealed the final relevant entry.

ROAD TEAM NOT NEEDED. WEATHER MAY HANDLE THIS.

Silence.

Richard’s face changed.

Vincent had considered intervention.

But no record showed he ordered anyone.

The brake issue may have been mechanical after all.

Or caused earlier by someone else.

The investigation could not yet prove murder.

Mark looked toward his father.

Richard saw what he wanted.

An enemy.

A clear person to punish.

Richard refused to give him one without proof.

“Anna’s death remains under review.”

Mark’s eyes flashed.

“You're protecting Claudia?”

“No.”

Richard’s voice sharpened.

“I’m protecting the truth from what we want it to be.”

Mark fell silent.

Then Lily entered carrying the birthday drawing again.

She pointed toward Claudia.

“Why Mommy lady crying?”

Claudia froze.

Lily did not call her Mom.

Not once.

Mark noticed.

Richard did too.

The child already understood something the adults were only beginning to admit.

May you like

Claudia had lived in Lily’s house for two years.

But Lily had never truly felt she belonged to her.
