Chapter 9

Mark denied calling Frank.
He demanded phone records.
Richard ordered them.
No hesitation.
The records showed a call from Mark’s office line to Frank at 10:58 p.m.
Mark stared at the timestamp.
“I wasn't there.”
“Where were you?”
“With Claudia.”
Claudia went still.
Richard looked at her.
She looked away.
“Where?”
“A hotel.”
Mark answered.
Richard’s jaw tightened.
The night someone accessed Anna’s garage, Mark and Claudia were together conducting their affair.
The hotel records confirmed the room booking.
Security footage showed Mark arriving at 9:20 p.m.
Claudia at 9:47.
Neither left before 1:00 a.m.
Mark could not have made the office call personally.
Someone used his office.
Richard looked at Claudia.
She understood.
“Anna.”
Mark whispered it first.
The room became silent.
Anna still had access to Mark’s office.
She knew about the affair.
She knew about the missing funds.
She knew Richard suspected Mark.
What if Anna herself had called Frank and arranged Richard’s car?
Why?
Richard’s investigator found the next piece.
Frank admitted the voice on the phone sounded distorted.
He assumed Mark had been drinking.
The caller instructed him to leave Richard’s car at the property and walk away.
Someone else picked it up later.
Frank never saw who.
Then Lily wandered into the study clutching the repaired edge of her birthday picture.
Richard immediately softened.
“You should be asleep.”
She looked at Mark.
Then Claudia.
“Mommy cried in the red room.”
Every adult froze.
Richard crouched.
“When?”
Lily pointed toward herself.
“When baby.”
A three-year-old’s timeline was unreliable.
But the red room had existed before Anna died.
Mark looked at Richard.
“I built it after she died.”
Richard stared.
“That’s what you said.”
Mark’s breathing changed.
Lily continued.
“Mommy put paper there.”
Richard looked toward the hidden basement.
The construction invoices were dated after Anna’s death.
But perhaps the room itself was older.
The wall paneling was inspected.
Behind the newer secure walls was an older storage chamber.
Built by the original owner.
Mark had not created it.
He had renovated it.
Inside a sealed cavity, investigators found an envelope Anna had hidden.
On the front:
FOR RICHARD — IF MARK DOESN’T TELL HIM FIRST.
Richard opened it.
May you like
Inside was not evidence accusing Mark of murder.
It was evidence accusing Claudia.
