Chapter 12

Mark stared at the investigator.

“No.”

The mechanic’s signed statement lay on the table.

Mark had visited three days before Anna’s crash.

He asked whether a brake problem could develop without warning.

Mark closed his eyes.

Then memory returned.

“Anna’s car was pulling.”

Richard watched him.

“What?”

“She complained the brake pedal felt wrong.”

“Why didn't you take it in?”

“I did.”

Mark looked toward Claudia.

“I asked the mechanic because I was worried.”

The service records showed Mark had requested an inspection.

But the appointment was scheduled for two days after Anna died.

That supported him.

Then Richard asked the question nobody had asked.

“If Anna already thought the brakes felt wrong, why was she driving that night?”

Silence.

The crash occurred during a snowstorm.

Anna left home after 11:00 p.m.

Where was she going?

The original police file listed no destination.

Her phone had been destroyed.

But one recovered email from her laptop answered it.

She had arranged to meet Richard.

At midnight.

At his old mountain office.

She intended to give him the hidden evidence against Mark and Claudia.

Richard stared at the email.

He never received it.

It had been sent to an address his assistant filtered automatically.

He had been asleep.

Anna drove into a storm to tell him the truth.

She never arrived.

Richard looked at Mark.

His son’s face had collapsed.

“If I hadn't—”

Richard cut him off.

“No.”

Mark looked up.

“Don't turn guilt into fact.”

The sentence surprised both men.

Richard had spent his life doing the opposite.

Then investigators found another overlooked detail.

Anna’s vehicle data showed she stopped for seven minutes at a gas station twenty miles before the crash.

Camera archives no longer existed.

But an old transaction record did.

She bought coffee.

And called someone from the station’s landline.

The number belonged to the Bellacorte estate.

Richard’s former night operator was found.

He remembered the call because Anna sounded terrified.

She asked whether Richard was alone.

The operator said no.

Richard was meeting with someone.

Anna asked who.

The operator told her.

Mark Bellacorte.

Mark stared at his father.

“I wasn't with you.”

Richard slowly nodded.

“I know.”

May you like

Someone had deliberately told Anna that Mark was waiting with Richard.

And that lie may have changed where she drove next.
