Chapter 11

Cullen revoked the medical authorization that afternoon.

He also sent the original document, Tove’s follow-up instructions, Margaret’s notes, and the foundation emails to his attorney.

The practical consequences began immediately.

The preschool requested a new emergency-contact plan.

Dr. Bell documented that Margaret’s earlier concerns had been medically reasonable.

Estate staff were interviewed about who had given instructions regarding Mireya’s inhaler.

The foundation’s independent counsel opened a review of Chase’s financing proposal and Tove’s communications about Margaret.

Then Margaret did something Cullen did not expect.

She moved out.

Not temporarily to calm down.

She packed everything she had kept in the mansion.

Cullen found her supervising two staff members carrying boxes toward the foyer.

“What are you doing?”

“What I should've done months ago.”

“Mom.”

“I love Mireya.”

Margaret closed her handbag.

“But I can't keep living in a house where protecting her depends on winning arguments with whoever you're in love with.”

Cullen took the words without defending himself.

“Where are you going?”

“My apartment.”

“You hate that apartment.”

“I hate this more.”

Mireya watched from the stairs.

“Grandma leaving?”

Margaret immediately went to her.

She crouched.

“Grandma has her own house, sweetheart.”

“Because Tove?”

Margaret looked toward Cullen.

“No.”

Her answer surprised him.

“Because Grandma needs her own space.”

She kissed Mireya.

“I’m still your grandma.”

After she left, Mireya refused dinner.

Cullen sat at the table across from an empty chair Margaret had occupied for years.

For the first time, he understood that exposing the truth would not restore what existed before.

What existed before had allowed the betrayal to happen.

Then his attorney called.

The evidence established a pattern.

But intent would still be difficult to prove.

Tove could claim she genuinely believed Margaret overreacted.

Chase could claim he asked about board fitness procedures for legitimate reasons.

The truth was becoming visible.

Accountability still required someone to connect motive to action.
