Chapter 14

The emergency foundation meeting took place in Manhattan.

Cullen sat at one end of the conference table.

Margaret sat near the middle.

Chase arrived with counsel.

Tove attended only for the portion involving her communications with board members.

Before the review was formally entered into the minutes, Cullen gave both of them one final opportunity.

“Correct anything you want corrected.”

Chase’s attorney objected to the phrasing.

Cullen ignored him.

Tove spoke first.

She admitted describing Margaret as unstable.

She admitted using Cullen’s concerns to give those descriptions credibility.

She admitted instructing staff to reduce what she considered unnecessary inhaler use.

But she continued insisting she believed she was helping Mireya become less anxious.

Margaret looked at her.

“You hid the inhaler.”

Tove looked down.

That detail resisted every reasonable explanation.

Chase refused to admit coordinating anything.

He maintained that his financing concerns and Margaret’s health were unrelated.

Then the board chair asked him:

“Why did you request information about removing Margaret only after she challenged your development partner?”

Chase had no clean answer.

Cullen could have humiliated him.

Instead he opened the full report.

Including his own authorization.

“I helped create the conditions that made this possible.”

Several board members looked surprised.

Cullen continued.

“My mother raised concerns. I treated them as personal conflict. Tove used my authority. Chase used my silence.”

He turned toward Margaret.

“I’m not asking you to excuse that.”

Margaret held his gaze.

Then Cullen voted to refer Chase’s financing conduct and related communications for independent legal and financial review.

He recused himself from the final decision regarding foundation sanctions.

That cost him control.

It was also the only decision that made accountability credible.

The board chair called for the formal vote.

Once it began, neither Cullen nor Chase could pull the matter back inside the family.
